Librarian (profession): description, necessary education

Choosing a profession is not always easy. Quite often applicants before entering the university experience certain difficulties with this issue. Today we have to find out what the librarian is doing. This profession is not so common in the modern world, but it does take place. How can you succeed here? On whom to learn? What qualities are most valued in this area? All this is to be learned further. True, not everyone will agree to build a career in our today's field. After all, the shortcomings of the profession are also there. They will have to learn about them so as not to make mistakes.

Who it

Librarian - a profession that, as already mentioned, is not too common in the modern world. Moreover, it is not so demanded, if you compare it with the same IT-technologies. Who is a librarian at all?

With such workers I have met at least once in my life. The librarian is an employee who works in the library. That is a kind of "keeper of books." Also, such an employee is well versed in the literature and is able to quickly help with finding the right information for citizens. In principle, nothing particularly difficult, as it seems, in the profession there. Only work in the library is really hard work. A true and successful librarian is endowed with many qualities and skills. How to become such an employee?

Training

Well, like any other profession, our today requires a certain education. If we consider that the direction itself is not very popular among modern youth, then the choice of specialties for further employment by the librarian is not too big.

Usually, preference is given simply to the humanities. In particular, the "Librarian", "Documentology", "Literature." Sometimes you can also meet "Culturology", "Philology". Rarely, but still there is such a specialty as "Management". In principle, a good librarian is not limited to higher education, you can learn it in a technical school. Exactly on the same lines.

On average, you will have to study like everyone else - 4.5-5 years. It does not matter what kind of place your work will be - the central library, children's or any other. But the fact remains: you need to learn. In some cases, you can do without a "tower", only then the lack of diploma must be covered by your personal knowledge and qualities. It really is not so easy - to prove to the employer that you are a true librarian.

Where to work

Where can I go for employment after graduating from a university or any other educational institution? Honestly, a librarian is a profession of rather narrow focus. So, the choice here will not be too great. Yes, with the development of progress and technology prospects in our current direction has become more, but they still do not greatly affect the workplace. Unless, the new duties and responsibilities of the highest degree appear.

For example, your place of work can become a state library. This honorable place goes only to the best workers, and if there is already someone there, especially hope for employment should not. After all, few people will agree to "move forward." Librarian, as a rule, is one for the entire institution. Or there are several of them (depending on the size of the building).

In addition, central and district libraries will now also be available for employment. In principle, a very good option, especially if these institutions are located near your home. The central library and the state do not have any significant differences. Only by the volume of work.

Only here in practice, usually librarians go to educational institutions to work. For example, school or university staff. Here this kind of stuff is needed all the time. A school librarian or a state librarian is not important, job duties in one place or another will be the same. In the same way as personal qualities are valued in these two completely different places the same. What will you have to do after you find a job?

Duties

Working in the library is a huge work in reality. After all, as already mentioned, only at first glance it seems that it's so easy to be such an employee. In fact, this is not so. Especially if you do not have aspirations and knowledge in literature and creativity. What should a librarian do?

This employee should sort the books in one or another institution. He also searches for and issues these, monitors the order in the building.

Pay attention - the duty also includes helping readers find necessary literature, their advice. That is, in some cases it is necessary to advise this or that book, to prompt, to what source to address.

When you receive new books, you will have to deal with them. Accept, bring in the base, put in a specially designated place for them. Not the easiest occupation, if you think about it. And if you consider that now there is a scientific electronic library, then in general you can go crazy from the amount of work performed. If you have found time to find employment in the area where there is an electronic library, prepare - you will have to deal with it completely and completely. Not a system administrator, not a programmer, but a librarian. So, not everyone can cope with such a large amount of work.

Earnings

Of course, when employing (and choosing the direction for work), great attention is paid to such an indicator as wages. The higher it is, the more entrants and young professionals will be striving for a particular profession. How are things with our current direction?

To be honest, not very good. The salary of a librarian, like that of most civil servants, as well as of "budget employees," is low. Both in Russia and in the capital. True, the difference is often felt.

On average, the librarian will earn about 6-9 thousand rubles. Not very much, is it? And not so important, the rural librarian is in front of us, or the usual urban one. The average salary in Russia for such employees usually does not exceed 10,000 rubles. But the load of this kind of staff is serious. And, as we have already seen, the amount of work that will have to be done, too. Not to mention the responsibility in the workplace.

But things are better in the capital. Not too much, but still it's better than nothing at all. Scientific electronic library or state library - it does not matter where you find employment. Note that in Moscow or St. Petersburg will have to work for about 15 000 rubles. More precisely, from 10 to 15 thousand. Librarians in large cities of Russia receive this much. If we are talking about schools and universities, then usually the situation is no different from the general picture of Russia.

It turns out that the librarian is a very important profession, but it is poorly paid. So, among the applicants and already graduated specialists is not so demanded. Most likely, if you want to find a job as a librarian, then you will not have a special competition. Judging by the statistics, about 60% of the population consider this area to be not too important and widespread.

Competitions

Despite all this, our today's profession has some variety. We will not only have to rearrange the books and do paperwork. After all, in Russia there is one very interesting competition. It is called the Librarian of the Year. Annually throughout the country, the best librarians meet together, conduct a demonstration of their knowledge, and compete for the title of the best employee in Russia.

In fact, it is very useful. First, you will be engaged in self-development. Secondly, you will become a famous person. Third, usually the winners are given some bonuses and bonuses, cash payments and privileges. In addition, the best librarian, as a rule, receives a salary higher than all the rest. Although, for many, even the All-Russian annual competition is not an incentive for employment.

Certification

Among other things, from time to time, attestation of librarians is conducted at the workplace. It would seem that it is difficult - to sort and distribute books, care for them, as well as extradition. Only now, our current profession, like any other profession, is still a responsible business. And therefore, it is impossible to hide from the certification. If you do not pass it, you can go look for another place of work.

What will have to be prepared? All libraries have their own rules for carrying out the process, so you will not be able to accurately answer this question. You should learn this nuance from your employer. Nevertheless, some general principles will still take place. Which ones?

First, you will be checked for knowledge of the assortment of books that are in the library. Also during this period, the effectiveness of your work is evaluated. How well are you aware of what has become a part of your life, your work? Will show attestation.

Secondly, most likely, will be evaluated and work with visitors. How well you serve the readers. It is possible that for this idea you "throw" a secret visitor. Quite popular technique, which is used more and more often.

Thirdly, attestation involves testing your knowledge. And literary. Not everywhere, but in very many places, it is the employer who will conduct such verification. As already mentioned, a good librarian is one who understands in the literature. An uneducated, stupid, ignorant employee is a shame for the whole institution.

But in practice it is usually enough to show how you work, how well and qualitatively you carry out your duties. Remember, the more prestigious the place of your work, the harder it will be to check. For example, the central library can hold it on all points, and even find fault with it all the time. Nevertheless, if you consider that competition for employment is small, then you will not become very "tyrannous." Most likely, just pass a symbolic certification "for a tick".

Qualities

Characteristics on the librarian are usually given at your former place of work. Well, or in high school, where you studied. If you can not take it anywhere, it's enough to present a resume when applying for a job. And indicate there their personal qualities. Those that any librarian should have. To be honest, there are quite a few items. What are they? What is recommended to indicate in the resume when finding a job in the library?

Literary skills and aspirations are the first and most important thing that can only be distinguished. The qualities of a librarian are inconceivable without knowledge of literature. After all, it will work with her. Nobody will start taking an uninformed employee. So, indicate that you know what you will work with.

Stassoustochivost - another no less important characteristic. It plays a role for any profession. A nervous and unbalanced person is recruited without special hunt. And when it comes to libraries - and even more so. After all, this place is a storehouse of knowledge, peace and tranquility.

Fast learner, the ability to perform monotonous work - that's what a good librarian needs. Especially it concerns the second moment. Working in the library is a constant monotonous work, which not everyone is subject to. So, if you do not know how to act within the instructions for a long time, if you need a "glade" for creativity and self-development, you will have to abandon the profession. On the fast learner and not worth talking about.

Openness, friendliness, discipline are qualities of the librarian, which also become extremely important. It is not very pleasant to come to the library and communicate there with the "manager", who is clearly not happy to see the visitor. Friendliness is the key to success almost in any direction of our life. If a person is open and friendly, communicate with him is pleasant. And this will not scare off the readers, it will be pleasant for them to attend a particular institution.

Initiative, concentration, restraint, self-control - these are the points that can not be forgotten. Librarians at many associate with the strict, seasoned people who keep themselves "in an iron grip". This status is not just invented. Indeed, a good librarian will differ not only in education, but also in restraint. These qualities should be for every self-respecting employee.

pros

It is not so important which place has become your "haven" in building a career - a state library, district or simple school. After all, any profession has its pros and cons. They do not really depend on the place of work. What are the advantages of our current direction?

If you are a creative person, you can only rejoice. The library is the place that will become your second home. Here you can work and have fun, develop and improve your literary knowledge.

If you do not have fast fatigue, can perform a long monotonous work, then this job will seem to you just a paradise. In fact, an active and proactive person can easily cope with the load, which is loaded on the shoulders of the librarian.

A lot of free time is a quality that is emphasized by most employees. Follow the order in the hall is usually obtained because of his desktop (place, reception). And, in general, most of the time will have to sit either at the computer (they are now everywhere), or simply for documents and a writing table. You can work quietly with your own affairs. For example, underwork.

Not always, as already mentioned, you need higher education for employment. The librarian's instruction points more to the fact that you should be just an educated and cultured person with skills and knowledge in the literature. So, everyone has employment prospects. One can not but emphasize the low level of competition.

disadvantages

However, the shortcomings of the direction are also more than enough. And one point plays an important role. Of course, we are talking about wages. It, as already mentioned, is low. Both in Russia and in the capitals. If you compare it with the load and responsibility that will be placed on your shoulders, then in the library you will simply lose time.

The lack of prospects for raising and developing a career also leaves its imprint on the popularity and demand for the profession of a librarian. There is no career ladder in this field. Therefore, it is possible to call this direction to some extent hopeless.

It has already been said about the load. Yes, quite often it is possible to do your own business during the workday - to earn money at the computer, read, embroider and so on (especially if you are not supervised by the authorities, the main thing is to look after the order in the building and respond to the first call of visitors), but there are moments , When the real shots happen. And then the amount of work and responsibility is simply not compared with your wages.

As you can see, the librarian is a profession that is not very popular among specialists. It requires special responsibility, knowledge and skills in the literature. Only a real fan of creativity and books will be able to work in the library on an ongoing basis. Rather, it's not even a profession, but a vocation!
