Lake Alakol, whose name is translated from the Kazakh language as "Variegated Lake", is a unique water resource of Kazakhstan. In terms of size, it ranks second among all inland waters of this country. During the day the waters of Alakol change their shade several times. In the morning the lake pleases the eye with a gentle turquoise, and at the end of the day the azure tones predominate. The change in the color palette is influenced by weather conditions.

Geographical information

Most travelers know exactly where Lake Alakol is - in the neighborhood of the Celestial Empire, at the intersection of the two regions - East Kazakhstan and Almaty. The reservoir covers an area of 2,700 km ² and lies at an altitude of 347 meters above sea level. The depth of the lake is 50 meters, and the length is 102 kilometers. The width reaches 54 kilometers. The water of Alakolis warms up to 24-26 degrees, and it tastes like sea water - the same salty.

The reservoir has undeniable healing properties, because its waters contain all elements of the periodic table. The only exception is iodine - it is not observed in the waves of Alakol. Historical reference

The first person to study Alakol Lake (a photo of this natural object presented in the article) was G. Karelin - a famous traveler and naturalist. In 1840, he visited the Balkhash-Alakol hollow, located at the foot of the Dzungarian Alatau. After a short time, interest in this area was shown by L. Schrenk - no less famous traveler. He was the first to measure the area of a natural reservoir. The academician wrote that it is equal to 1700 km ² . In 1862, these data were refuted by A. Golubev. His studies showed that the area of the water surface increased, and the length of the pond was 70 km, and the width - 40.

In 1931, these figures increased even further: to 75 and 48 kilometers, respectively, the depth was four meters. These measurements were made by B. Terletsky. Exactly after 20 years V. Kurdyukov occupied the study of the water body. Its data had the following form: the depth of the lake is 90 km, the width is 50 km, and the depth is 34 m. Over the past few years, Alakol's area has increased even more.

A few more facts

Some sources say that in ancient times Lake Alakol was of a completely different name - Gurgen-Nor. From the Mongolian it is translated as "Lake Mosty". Probably, a long time ago land sections that shared a chain of lakes, something resembled bridges.

From Alakol itself no river flows. But it flows into small water streams: Zhamanty, Urdzhar, Tasty, Zhamanutkol, Khatynsu and Emel. Many of them dry out in the summer. The remaining streams remain "alive" due to the fact that, descending from the Dzhungar Alatau, they leave for the underground bowels and continue their current there. And in Alakol they already flow like powerful rivers.

"Aigerim"

But the greatest success is enjoyed by the rest house "Aigerim". It is located in the part of the lake, which is located on the part of the East Kazakhstan region (Urdzhar district).
