KrAZ-255B - technical characteristics. Kremenchug Automobile Plant

The last century was in many ways not the best time in the history of mankind. There were wars, and the newest deadly diseases, there was a division of countries and the drawing of borders ... But at that time a lot of good things happened. The latter can easily include most of the scientific discoveries and useful inventions.

In addition, the flowering of technology, which occurred during the transition to a postindustrial society, also affected the automotive industry, and in all countries. For Russia, and at that time still for the Soviet Union, there was a good time in this historical aspect. A vivid example of this is the KrAZ-255B.

What will we talk about?

The topic of the conversation, as you have already understood from a small preface, will be this car. This truck-cross-country vehicle - a truly iconic thing, you can say, the milestone of the entire automotive industry of the last century.

Strictly speaking, KrAZ-Laptevnik, as it is still called by drivers, was one of the most massive trucks in such a huge country as the USSR of the late twentieth century. Disadvantages in it, if they were, then corrected by engineers constantly. In fact, this version of the all-terrain vehicle appeared. Previously, other models were produced, but eventually everything turned into those cars that can still be found on the road today, although they are not released in the twenty-first century.

Heritage

For its time, the two hundred and fourteenth model was quite good - it coped with its duties, and this turned out to be quite enough. Nevertheless, by the sixties, time had nevertheless caught up with this, no doubt, a great car. The need for modernization no longer loomed in the distance, but was literally hanging in the air.

These trucks were not very different from each other. To tell the truth, it was possible to distinguish one model from another only on wide-profile tires. Nevertheless, there were modifications, and they changed the design of the car quite seriously.

The internal filling was changed to an order of magnitude, unlike the previous version. So, the car KrAZ-255B and became the cargo "king of roads." Recognized is all the drivers, even if they called it in daily conversations only "laptezhnikom". Nevertheless, even models of forty years ago are still used throughout the CIS, and in other countries too. This speaks only of the high quality of production.

Main settings

Kremenchug Automobile Plant has produced quite a few such machines. All of them were made on the basis of the 214th model and for seventeen years were leading in many industries.

Talk about equipment should start with a diesel engine. The construction used here is called YMZ-238. This is quite powerful, but at the same time, an economical unit.

Wide-profile tires, which were already mentioned earlier, in general became a distinctive feature of the KrAZ-255B.

It was intended primarily for the transport of a variety of goods. In addition, the ease of riding on rough terrain only added opportunities. The latter were used by many state institutions, ordering certain modifications specially tailored for one single purpose.

The cabin, to which the model was equipped, was made on the basis of a wooden frame, sheathed with sheet metal. The glasses used were strong enough to withstand high pressure. Inside, three people were freely accommodated.

KrAZ-255B - engine specifications

It is possible to describe KrAZ for quite some time. It is necessary to begin with exactly the details of the construction, which leads this machine into motion.

Naturally, this is the engine. But not only what, but V-shaped, with eight cylinders. It was powered by diesel, and fuel consumption, especially given the size of the car, was low enough. Each of the installed cylinders was equipped with two valves, which increased the total capacity.

The latter represented an impressive figure of two hundred and ten horsepower at 2100 rpm. The torque is also quite impressive - 90 kg / m taking into account one and a half thousand revolutions per minute. The compression ratio here is sixteen and a half, and the working volume is almost fifteen liters.

Suspension

No less important part of the car than the engine. KrAZ-255B was equipped with both front and rear suspension. They were made a little differently, which is quite logical, given the weight and dimensions with which we had to work.

The front suspension was made using two longitudinal semielliptical springs. The latter were equipped with an additional pair of double-acting shock absorbers. That is, they were immediately hydraulic and telescopic.

The rear suspension, in turn, was based on the same springs as the front suspension . Nevertheless, there is a difference, and it is in the whole six of the reactive rods.

Clutch and gearbox

Kremenchug Automobile Plant used a clutch of the same class as the engine, that is, YaMZ-238. The design was based on two dry-type discs with several cylindrical pressure springs.

The transmission is called YMZ-236N, it was designated by its characteristics as a five-stage and three-way. There was a system of permanent engagement here, naturally, without taking into account the first and back gears. Also worth noting separately is the presence of synchronizers on the transitions from the second to the third and from the fourth to the fifth speed.

Cardan gear and transfer case

The first was constructed from the whole five cardan shafts. The mechanism was strengthened by an intermediate support. Thus, the entire structure was sufficiently robust and at the same time easy to assemble. The shafts were of an exclusively open type.

The second, in turn, was characterized as a mechanical and two-stage. Also note the presence of an inter-axle differential for the rear trolley. With this instrument, the power take-off for the rear winch and other attachments was switched on.

Bridges

Three of them were used in their construction. Naturally, they were unified according to the basic details. Each of the trio was equipped with its own reducer. The semi-axles were completely unloaded.

Of all the bridges, the front one stands out. It is equipped with an additional mechanism. The latter is the hinges of equal angular velocities. Car enthusiasts know that with their help, torque is transmitted to the driving wheels to increase maneuverability during turns.

Some changes have also been made to the design of the middle bridge. So, there is a treated area. It is used as a support to correctly install the propeller shaft of the rear axle.

Optional equipment

In addition to all of the above, you need to note some more spare parts. KrAZ-255B without them simply can not exist.

First of all, this concerns the pre-engine heater of the engine, as well as a centralized tire pressure regulation system. For certain modifications of this truck, all-terrain vehicle was also characterized by other attachments, but this is not so significant.

Also, you should especially note the tires, which I've mentioned many times before. Their dimensions are very impressive - 1300x530x533 mm. Given that the design involves the use of six wheels at once, this is a very important point.

Still need to say a few words about batteries. They are used here just two, which is logical, given the size of the machine. A series of these devices is designated by the marking 6ST-182EM.

Dimensions of KrAZ-255B

Separately, it is worth discussing the dimensions of this huge car. Actually, it represents a rather impressive design, which should be taken into account when driving, and when buying.

The length is a little over eight and a half meters. More specifically, it is 8 meters and 64.5 centimeters. The width of the car is quite large - two meters and three quarters. Height, by the way, is a very special measurement for a truck, because there are two different conditions - the dimensions of the cabin or the general, together with the tent. Here the first indicator will be two meters and ninety-four centimeters, and the second, respectively, three meters fifteen centimeters.

Given the rather stringent traffic rules for trucks, those who are going to acquire KrAZ, you need to think twice and carefully read the documentation. Some roads will become inaccessible, which creates unnecessary difficulties.

Known modifications

This came a little earlier. Many instances ordered special vehicles for their own needs. Despite the fact that the 255B model has received the widest fame, it is by no means the only one that can be met on the road even today.

First of all, I must say about the basic improvement of the machine. It received the marking 255B1. Actually, the whole change was in the braking system. The drive of the brakes was made separate, which seemed to the plant engineers a good idea. So it actually was. After 1979, the Kremenchug plant produced them.

KrAZ model number 255V is also quite well-known - it is a truck tractor. It was intended, as you might guess, to transport large loads in a trailer. The weight of the latter could reach twenty-six tons, but sometimes even exceeded this already impressive figure.

KrAZ-255D in mass production was not launched. This is also a truck tractor, only for work with a certain trailer. Experimental test specimens passed, but the indicators did not reach the required level.

At one time, KrAZ-255L, that is timber trucks, were quite popular. They differed from others in that they lacked a system for adjusting tire pressure, but they were adapted to work with various trailers dissolving.

In addition, there is another modification of the piece, you can say, production. 256B1-030 was released only eighteen pieces, and they were intended for work in the area of radiation contamination around the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Specific materials, such as lead and crystal, were used for manufacturing. After the end of service they are buried in radiation burial grounds.

A few parting words to those who are going to buy such cars. Firstly, repair of KrAZ can be a real test for you. The fact is that there are not so many new mechanisms in working order. Therefore, finding something will be rather expensive. In addition, it is not very safe to use substitutes, since they are sharpened for other mechanisms. The machine itself was withdrawn from production more than 10 years ago.

Cost

What is the price of the domestic car KrAZ-255B? This question is very complicated. Serial production is completed quite a long time, which means that if you buy, then only used cars. But everything here will depend on the state. On average, the purchase will cost you five or eight thousand dollars.
