On the paternal line, the ancestor of Igor Ashurbeyli was Ashur-khan Afshar, the Minister of War (Sardar) of Azerbaijan (mid-18th century). Nadir-Shah Afshar, the cousin of Iran who came to him, granted Ashur-khan large tracts of land on the outskirts of Baku. The descendants of the khan, who received the title of the king from the tsar and took the name Ashurbekov, entered the history of the Russian Empire as successful oil owners and generous philanthropists. The end of prosperity was laid by the revolution. The power of the Soviets took all that she could from the family - land, houses, businesses, business. Many emigrated, others decided at their own peril and risk of staying. That noble origin was not evident, the heads of families got rid of the basis of "bek" in their surname (from Turkic "bek" is translated as "ruler, prince, lord"). So the Ashurbekovs turned into Ashurbeyli. But it still did not save us from repression.
