Hydrocortisone ointment

Hydrocortisone ointment refers to synthetic glucocorticosteroid preparations. The drug is used externally.

Hydrocortisone ointment has anti-edematous, anti-inflammatory and antipruritic effects.

One gram of the drug contains hydrocortisone acetate (ten milligrams). As an auxiliary component, the medicament contains anhydrous lanolin, pentol, petrolatum, stearic acid, nipose, purified water and nipagin.

After the application of the drug, its main accumulation occurs in the granular layer of the epidermis. Hydrocortisone ointment is metabolized in the epidermis and, further, in the liver. Isolation occurs kidney and bile.

The drug is used externally. Application is carried out a thin layer on the affected area. The duration of the therapeutic course depends on the nature of the disease. Typically, the treatment lasts from six to fourteen days. The persistent course of the disease involves an increase in the course of treatment to twenty days. It is allowed to use occlusive dressings on limited foci. Thus, the effect of the drug can be enhanced.

Glucocorticosteroids have the ability to penetrate the placenta. It should be noted that the pronounced effect of the drug may be manifested when applied to extensive areas. In this regard, hydrocortisone ointment is prescribed with extreme caution during lactation and pregnancy.

Long-term use of the drug in large areas involves the appointment of a special diet.

Individual intolerance in the use of medication can occur in the form of hyperemia, itching and swelling in the areas of application of the drug. In some cases, there is a secondary lesion of the infectious coat, as well as atrophic changes and hypertrichosis.
