The term, which we will discuss in this article, came to us from the middle of the seventeenth century and came from two German words: "band" and "anhsel", translated literally as "bow" and "armpit". Aiguillettes are widely used as decorations for the uniforms of various arms, but they can also be part of a dance, masquerade or theatrical costume. Let's find out how to sew an acellant correctly.

When to wear an aglibant

This accessory is the most important part of the military uniform, so no serviceman will appear on the parade without him. This also applies to those who play in a military band or bear a guard of honor. As a rule, the aiguillet is fixed on the right shoulder. By the way, participants of modern collectives can also supply their costumes with this accessory, for example, it comes in the form of a company of drummers.

But how to sew an aglet if the costume is part of the historical reconstruction? In this case, the location should correspond to this era, because the traditions have changed over time and are changing now. Moreover, among the various arms and even regiments there may be ways of attaching this accessory to the uniform.

How to sew an aglobant

Since it's not just a rope, it's a whole bunch, it's not always possible to attach them to the uniform beautifully and neatly the first time - you need skill here. There is a common tradition for the combined arms and sea form, according to which the aiguillet is fastened under the right shoulder strap. This principle is maintained for all kinds of accessories. Aksel'bant on the dress uniform is fastened like this:

• First the shoulder strap must be turned halfway.
• Then, at a distance of five millimeters from its edge, put the cloth hanging from the top of the aiguillette, the first to be a cord, which is crowned with a brush, a metal tip or any other ornament. If there is any on all cords, then it is not necessary to observe the order, but you should arrange them so as to avoid overlapping.

• The second end is attached under the lapel with a tip. For this to be possible, a button is sewn specially for it, although in some cases a buttonhole is taken from a thread or a thin rope. It does not matter how the tip will be fixed, the main thing is that the buttonhole or button does not protrude from under the lapel.

Origin

The described accessory has a rather unusual look, so many are interested not only in how to sew an agateband, but also its origin. Since it appeared almost three hundred years ago, it is difficult to accurately restore the chain of events, but there are three versions of the emergence of this integral part of the modern parade form.

The first version says that initially the aigle was a fodder rope, which the cavalrymen wore on their shoulders, and the metal tips were meant for cleaning the seeds. There is also an opinion that, in addition to the fodder rope, it could serve as a musket wick.

In a sign of contempt

The second version tells about the heroic history that occurred during the struggle of the Netherlands for independence against Spain. Under the leadership of the Spanish Duke Alba was a Dutch regiment, soldiers from which did not want to fight against fellow countrymen, and went over to their side. Fernando Alvarez de Toledo, as the duke was called, was furious and everyone who managed to take prisoner from this regiment was hanging. The Dutch began to wear a rope on their shoulder, thus expressing their contempt.

According to the third version, an accessory appeared in France. It is believed that the adjutants wore a small loop on their shoulders from a rope, which they threw around the horse's neck when the general dismounted. For convenience, the serviceman always carried it with him, fixing it on a chase or epolet.

History

The question of how to properly sew an agile tribute to a tunic began to worry the soldiers of the Russian Empire in the early 18th century, when this accessory was taken from Europe. Grenadier and musketeer uniforms were decorated with them, and the officers had a gold-plated or silver-plated cord, and soldiers had a plain thread. Two hundred years later, he was firmly entrenched in the general form, became an integral part of the tailors of the Adjutants and officers of the General Staff.

However, after the revolution of 1917, the aglibant in all branches of the army was abolished as a "royal relic." More than half a century later, in 1971, it was reintroduced, but only for the musicians of the Moscow Garrison Orchestra, as well as for the uniform of the Guard of Honor soldiers.
