How to plant raspberries in spring? Choice of a site and planting material, planting dates

Raspberry bush is an integral part of any dacha. After all, a delicious berry can be enjoyed not only in the summer in a fresh form, but also in the winter in the form of jams and jam. But, despite the prevalence of the plant, amateur gardeners continue to wonder how to plant raspberries in the spring, how to care for the seedlings, what to fertilize, and so on.

Selection of raspberry plants

Raspberry - the plant is not particularly whimsical, but the place of planting, and the sapling itself matter. Shoots should be of medium thickness. The advantage is better to give the thin stalk. The root system should be well developed, fibrous, with white shoots, with a few mature superficial stems.

When transporting the seedling, its open root system should be wrapped with a wet or damp cloth. Roots should not stay in the open air for a long time. Undesirable is also the long-term maintenance of moist planting material in a plastic bag or bag. This worsens the quality of the plant, spoils the roots, which begin to burn and rot.

Raspberry seedlings are trimmed before planting, leaving no more than 35 centimeters.

Soil and location: preparation for planting

Raspberries can grow in general in any place, but for abundant fruiting it needs light and sun. And since this plant is a perennial, the location must be thought out. Placing a penumbra near the fence is considered auspicious. It is desirable that the sun at the same time more than her warmed after dinner. Planting black raspberries along the fence is undesirable. This view prefers quiet places, protected from the wind, for example, somewhere in the corner of the garden.

When preparing a place, we must weed the area from perennial weeds. Planting seedlings should not be where potatoes or tomatoes have just grown. Good predecessors will be peas, beans, cucumbers, zucchini.

The roots of the plant are superficial, therefore, before planting raspberries in spring, the soil should not be deeply loosened. However, drainage for roots is mandatory. For spring planting, the soil is prepared in the fall: digs up, fertilizes. Raspberry gives preference to fertile, light loamy soils. Groundwater should not lie close to it. You can plant raspberries in sandy or sandy loamy soil. But every year such a place will require organic fertilizers and regular watering.

When to plant raspberries in spring: the time frame

The timing of planting raspberries vary. The optimal period is considered the second decade of March and the beginning of April. During this period the plant still does not have time to wake up after the winter, the juices do not yet move, which means that the seedling will survive the planting or transplanting easier. Gardeners of the northern regions, where moist and protracted spring, prefer this period. Before planting raspberries in the spring, you should familiarize yourself with the weather forecast and make sure that in the next three weeks is not expected to sub-zero temperature, especially at night.

In the middle belt, the time for planting raspberries is of no special significance, the climate is favorable to any choice. For southern regions, where the spring passes quickly and hot hot days are coming in, planting raspberry bushes in the spring will not be the best option, since the young seedlings will quickly bud and the new roots will not yet grow. If the moisture is not enough, the seedling will either take a long time to survive or die.

Common ways of planting raspberries

Raspberry can be planted:

  • Rows;
  • Bushes;
  • In the container.

A common method is preferred by most gardeners. It, in turn, is divided into trench and pit. Trenches for planting are prepared three weeks before planting. How correctly to plant a raspberry in a trench way? The site is marked with stakes, a cord is stretched, a trench is digging about forty centimeters deep, half a meter wide. The desired direction for the trench is from the north-east to south-west.

The bush method assumes the location of the bushes from each other at a distance of one and a half meters. In four years the raspberry bush will have at least ten developed shoots.

Planting in containers is resorted to if the size of the garden is not impressive, and you want to plant a lot. The size of the container should be 50 x 50 centimeters. The bottom of the tank is cut off, and it digs into the pit. In this situation, the shoots do not grow very much, and the free space can be safely used to plant another crop.

Planting a raspberry plant

Before planting raspberries in the spring in the soil, it must be added to ash, which improves the taste of berries, reparted manure or compost. Do not forget about mineral fertilizers, for example, superphosphate. Nitrogen fertilizers should be avoided when planting. They worsen rooting, development and wintering of the plant.

The site of the future planting, whether it is a pit or a trench, must be watered abundantly. If before that there were good rains, then watering the holes is not worth it, it will only be necessary to compact the soil around the bush with your feet and sprinkle mulch from sawdust and manure.

Before planting raspberries in spring, the roots of the seedling should be dipped in a solution of mullein with clay. Roots before landing in the ground should be well spread out so that they do not bend upward.

The root neck, the place where the stem goes to the roots, should be at ground level after planting. Its deep penetration will lead to a slow growth, if you leave the cervix above the ground, then the root buds, from which new raspberry shoots are formed, will dry up.

Trellis

Planting and caring for raspberries require a garter. To do this, in the raspberries set trellis. Their role can be performed by iron pipes, wooden or reinforced concrete posts with a height of at least two meters. In the case of long rows, additional poles should be installed in the row, every four meters. Between the poles, four-millimeter galvanized wire is pulled. It can be replaced by any other wire that does not bend under strong tension. The first row at a height of one meter from the ground is suitable for seedlings of the first year. In total, two or three rows of wire with an intermediate distance of sixty centimeters are required.

Raspberry seed fertilizer

Raspberry supplementation is carried out not only every year, but also immediately after planting. After all, the root system, which has fallen into a new place, needs not only to grow, but also to provide the leaves with everything necessary. Organic fertilizers - 12 kg per 1 m ², phosphorus - 20 grams per 1 m ² or superphosphate - 100 grams per 1 m ², potassium sulfate - 50 grams per 1 m2 will contribute to the rooting of raspberries.

For further growth, the seedlings need nitrogen fertilizers, nitrate or a 5 percent solution of chicken manure, urea, phosphorus, superphosphate, potassium or potassium sulfate. Phosphorus and potash fertilizers can be added every three years. In spring, before the first loosening, nitrogen fertilizers are introduced directly under the bush. Humus or compost are poured in the spring after the first loosening. Organic mulch can be applied either in autumn or in spring. Raspberry feeding should be done every year, this will ensure its good growth and high yield.

Care of the seedlings after planting

Post-planting care for seedlings is enough irrigation. Watering is made from the expense: a bucket for three or four seedlings. After that, the hole around the bush is covered with dry soil. Planting and caring for raspberries require mulch, which can be used both in the aisle and in rows. As mulch, gardeners use manure, straw, peat, compost or sawdust. Mulching eliminates the need to work the soil and helps to keep moisture in it, does not allow the soil to overheat during the summer heat, promotes the development of a powerful root system. If mulching only the rows, then the rows in the fall should be dug.

For areas with a lack of precipitation, polyethylene film is used as mulch. It spreads along the row, the edges are buried in the soil. The cuttings on the film are made over each seedling, then it moves apart slightly to make the shoots break through.

The first winter raspberry

For a raspberry the best protection against frosts, strong winds and changes in temperature will be a snow drift. In order for the snow to cover the plant, it is bent to the ground at the end of September or the beginning of October, while the stems are flexible, about thirty centimeters from the surface of the earth. The fallen snow will cover the stems, protect them from low temperatures, winds and sunlight. If there is not enough snow, then it should be collected from free areas and poured into raspberries. In February-March, when the snow begins to melt, the stalks seem to be covered from the sun's rays.

If the variety is frost-hardy, then it is not necessary to bend it and cover it with snow, but it is necessary to tie it into a tight sheaf around the stake, which prevents the wind and drains the tissues. Free the stems should be after the snow.

Raspberry is a bush distributed in all regions of the country. After landing, only the first year will be difficult. But, observing simple rules, providing the necessary care and watering, you will soon be able to enjoy fragrant and juicy fruits. We hope that the information on how to properly plant a raspberries, presented in the article, will be useful for you. Good harvest!
