How does the WOT server work?

The server infrastructure of the World of Tanks game is a huge synchronized system. It consists of several regional servers, divided into special synchronized groups of personal computers, which are called clusters. Each WOT server is combined with high-speed channels, which form a single user hardware resource. Any of the above PC groups is divided into small clusters that do not synchronize with each other. This allows the peaks of network traffic to be smoothed. Each WOT server has a standard configuration for modern data centers. Thus, one cluster, the capacity of which is determined by 160 thousand concurrent users, requires about one hundred game servers, as well as up to ten powerful servers as databases.

Where is the WOT server located?

In the process of development of this project, as well as the company's entry into the regional markets, its infrastructure is constantly growing, new centers are opening, and the number of clusters is increasing. At the moment the project has four main data centers: European, North American, Russian and Chinese. Russian WOT server Began work in 2010, and in less than two years the number of users on it exceeded the mark of five million. At the moment, the Russian cluster is located in the capital of our country. Now, within the Russian "pleiad" of servers, there are seven main groups, four of which are in Moscow, and one in Novosibirsk, Munich (Germany) and Amsterdam (Netherlands). The European group consists of two clusters located in Munich. American includes only one server (Washington, USA). Asian, the youngest, opened in 2012, is located in Singapore (Malaysia) and in Seoul (Korea). There is also a Chinese cluster, which consists of two groups located in the cities of Hebei and Shanghai.

The game server is designed to perform computational and communication functions. That is, they receive data from players, process them and send updates to the game customers. And the separation or combination of these functions is constantly changing within a certain physical cluster. All messages received by the server and user are recorded together with additional information, for example, on the time of receipt. The system uses this data to determine how to update the state of the game client. For example, the server received a message that was not processed for 100 ms, in which case the system compensates for this gap when the update is performed.

Test server WOT 08.6

This system is designed for preliminary testing of planned updates of the game process. Test servers are run for a short time, during which the developers, thanks to the players, can "roll over" the novelties, which will subsequently be introduced into the game. Thus, within the general test, special clients with different versions are created. Test server 0.8.6. Was launched on June 1, 2013 and worked for 6 days. During this period, the new card "Sacred Valley" was tested, changes were made to some old maps, and the branches of the automatic control system expanded to the tenth level.
