Guantanamo: prison or hell?

There is a city in the south-east of Cuba, founded by the French and Catalans. In 2020 he will be 200 years old. This is a typical Cuban city of medium size. It has "cubed" modern buildings, a beautiful church, several examples of architecture of the nineteenth century. Around the sugar plantations, the semi-desert, known Monitongos - stone natural formations, similar to a train traveling through the desert. But this is not Guantanamo today. The prison (photo), built in 2002, today is considered one of the most cruel on the planet. Officially, it is intended for terrorists and those who fought on the side of the enemy. This place today is one of Guantamo's most visited "sights". The prison is 30 km from the city, and, of course, even close to it tourists are not allowed. But few of them miss the opportunity even at a distance to look at the walls of the casemate, famous for the whole world for its stiffness and violation of the rights of prisoners.

Official statistics

Why Guantamo? The prison is built by the United States and rented permanently from Cuba. On the same territory is the military base of America. It carries the same name as the bay, river, province and city: Guantamo. Prison is its natural extension. The first "tenants" were brought here in 2002. 20 Afghans, fighting on the side of the Taliban, became the first prisoners of the casemate. Since then, more than 750 foreigners have passed through it, among them there were eight Russians. Some of them were extradited, some were transferred to other prisons, some were released. But this is not famous for Guantanamo. The prison is notorious for the fact that many prisoners were held there for years without being charged. Moreover, there were and are many criminals, whose names are classified in the most careful way. Is this justified? There are different opinions among politicians. In 2006, B. Obama issued an order to disband and close the casemate. The whole world learned how cruelly the prisoners were tortured, how they mocked them and humiliated their dignity. After Obama's decree, some of them were released, the other was transferred to other places. But the decree was never implemented: several prisoners (according to various sources, from 10 to 490 people) are still kept there.

Is it possible to justify rigidity?

Why is everyone so afraid of Guantanamo? The prison has become famous for the fact that they contain not only those who have already committed a crime. Here even those who can do it are held. What is Guantanamo? The prison, on the territory of which no law, no convention operates.
A few months ago, the world was shocked by shots of bullying of prisoners. Of course, such cruelty and such lawlessness have no justifications. On the other hand, it is for certain that 99% of the prisoners released from Guantánamo are again taking up arms and directing them against the world on the planet. Some politicians believe that they are doing this to take revenge on those who kept them in prison. Others are sure that no camera, no mockery, will be able to rehabilitate terrorists. What's next for Guantamo? Unknown. But now not only the beauty of nature attracts tourists to the island of Cuba. Guantanamo prison is an object that attracts the attention, at times, to the unhealthy attention of many people arriving on the island of Freedom.
