Jasmine (shrub): planting and care, photo, pruning

To grow a neat and beautiful plant, it is important to know and perform some agrotechnical techniques:

  • Jasmine has a good shade, so it can grow both in the sun and in shaded places. But planted in a well-lit area, the plant will be much faster to develop and more abundant to blossom.

  • Planting seedlings can be carried out early in spring or autumn. These are favorable periods for the establishment and development of young shrubs.
  • The plant is unprincipled to the soil, but it can open in all its glory only on fertile soil.

  • Jasmine does not tolerate stagnation of water, so it is recommended to plant it on a high plot or to make a preliminary drainage of gravel and sand, gravel or broken bricks with a height of at least 15 cm.
  • The pit for the planting of the seedling is excavated at a depth of at least 50 cm. The soil must be sufficiently fertile. It is advisable to apply nitrophos (30 g). When planting a plant, it is important to ensure that its root system is buried no more than 3 cm into the ground. The earth around the bush should be dumped and watered abundantly.

  • Jasmine pruning is performed as follows: an inclined branch cut is made at an angle of 45 degrees and all the places are treated with garden vine.

Feeding

  • Top dressing of garden jasmine is started about one year after planting.
  • Among organic fertilizers, manure slurry proved to be quite good. That the bush of a jasmin has not received a burn, manure is planted with water 1 to 10. Such top dressing is carried out once a year. You can also use wood (birch or apple) ash. One 100 g of such fertilizer is enough for one bush.

  • The following composition can be used as mineral fertilizer. Take 10 liters of water: 30 g of superphosphate, 15 g of potassium sulfurous and 15 g of urea. All components should be thoroughly mixed in a bucket of water and pour the contents under one or two bush. Faded plant can also be fed by adding 20 g of superphosphate and 15 g of potassium to the soil.

Jasmine: care and pruning

When growing jasmine pruning is an important process: it allows you to give the plant a neat and tidy appearance and helps the bush look healthy and lush. The first pruning is performed immediately after planting the seedling. On the bush, remove all the shoots located incorrectly, leaving only two or three branches with several strong buds. All the rest is cut out.

Jasmine - the plant is not winter hardy and needs warmth. In regions with a more severe climate, bushes every winter freeze, and they appear a lot of spoiled, dry branches. That is why, after the winter, spring pruning of jasmine is carried out. It is done only with a sharp instrument. For these purposes, a qualitative secateur is perfect.

Spring pruning

Pruning jasmine in the spring is performed before the buds awaken. This procedure promotes a more lush flowering and a good growth of young shoots.

In order for the crown of the plant to be beautiful, when pruning it is necessary to remove all branches that are older than 9-10 years, as well as heavily thickening the crown of the shoots. Typically, the correct pruning of spring jasmine involves the removal of very adult branches to free space for young shoots. After that, the shrub produces a lot of young shoots, which for the next year will brightly blossom. The best time for spring pruning is the end of March - the first decade of April.

If the bush is still young and is no more than 2-3 years old, it is necessary to remove the branches that darken the crown in the spring. Usually such trimming of jasmine is done one year after planting.

Sanitary pruning

Its goal is to remove all dry, dead, frozen shoots that could not survive the winter frosts. The removal of all diseased and injured branches that were broken by the wind is also performed. This procedure is done before buds awaken and active sap movement begins.

Pruning after flowering

After flowering of jasmine, it is also necessary to prune the bushes. First, it helps to maintain the shrubs their decorativeness, because the purpose of this procedure is to remove faded inflorescences. Secondly, pruning jasmine after its flowering promotes the formation of a lush bush, since all varieties of this plant, especially vigorous, with uneven illumination can grow one-sided.

The procedure is done with a sharp instrument, while the wilted flowers are cut. In this case, it is not necessary to carry out the processing of the location of the slices. Also cut off too long shoots, spoiling the ornamentation of the crown of the bush. At the same time, you can perform another sanitary procedure. To do this, inspect the bush, remove all weak and diseased shoots, broken branches.

Forming pruning

The height of jasmine can reach more than 2 m, while too tall bush often looks pretty untidy. To improve the appearance of the plant, jasmine pruning is carried out. It must be done during the whole vegetation period. When forming shrubs, too long branches are trimmed, giving the plant a neat shape. Thin and weak shoots are shortened by half or a third. The purpose of this pruning is to give the desired shape to the bushes. In addition, this procedure causes the growth of new young shoots, the next year on which there will be a lot of flowers.

Conduct formative pruning is necessary and in the event that the plant is used as a hedge. For this, the strongest branches are cut slightly, and the thinner ones, on the contrary, are strong. This improves the shape of the plant and promotes a good growth of annual shoots.

Rejuvenation

Over time, jasmine grows, its branches become bare. If the bush becomes old, it is necessary to perform a rejuvenating pruning. You can do it throughout the season, but the best time for this is spring. To rejuvenate jasmine bushes, you need to cut 4 or 5 trunks to 0.5 m, and cut the remaining shoots to the ground, that is, to the ground. In order that the plant does not become infected with fungal diseases, all exposed sections should be treated. The best means for this is garden var. After the rejuvenating pruning, the stock circle is mulched and fertilized with compost or Mullein solution. Cropped shrubs throughout the summer period should be watered and fertilized abundantly, so that it quickly recruits mass.

When new buds start to appear from the sleeping buds, they must be completely removed. After rejuvenating trim, gardeners leave no more than three strong branches on the stump. This is the future basis for a new bush. The next year the plant will gain weight, and in two or three years you will be able to enjoy the beautiful lush flowering of a dense new bush.

Autumn Trimming

In autumn, sanitary pruning of jasmine is again performed, and too long shoots are shortened. Also, the plant begins to prepare for winter.

As a rule, adult jasmine bushes do not need any additional training, as they tolerate cold temperatures well. During the winter period, only the tops of the young branches are mostly damaged, but after the spring forming trimming the shrubbery is rapidly gaining strength and is completely restored.

But it is not so easy for young plants to endure winter cold, so if there is not a jasmine bush for another year, it should be hidden in late autumn.

In late autumn, near the trunk of the plant, they dig through the soil and fall asleep with mulch, manure, garden compost or pine needles. This is done so that the root system of jasmine does not freeze.

Thanks to its unpretentiousness and ease of care, ease of reproduction, this plant has won the hearts of many gardeners. An adult beautifully flowering jasmine (shrub), pruned in this article, is a visiting card of the garden. A charming unique aroma, abundant beautiful flowering, snow-white, simple, double flowers attract the looks of all passers-by. Looking at the bush, you want to stop, breathe in its delicate aroma and enjoy magnificent beauty.
