Gate valve: features of use

Gate valve is a device that is designed to work as a shut-off valve in various processing lines. The mechanism is used on trunk pipelines to block the movement of dirty and slime waters, bulk materials, paper and cellulose media.

Devices are used in sewerage systems, cleaning facilities, in the energy, pulp and paper, mining, food, chemical and other industries and municipal services. The gate valve from other similar devices is distinguished by the design of the locking element.

In this type of device used a metal plate or wedge, which are able to cut inclusions in the liquids flowing inside the valve. Shut-off valves are used to completely block the flow of any medium in the pipeline.

The knife gate valve can be installed with a vertically located spindle, the flywheel upwards only on horizontal pipelines. Each shut-off valve can be either completely closed or in an open state. It is inadmissible to use locking devices for throttling (incomplete closure or opening).

Gate valve with electric drive allows to mechanize the operation of the device. It is used to maintain flows with a low pressure drop. Devices allow you to block access to equipment and have dimensions from 10 mm to 2.7 meters. Throttle devices have large dimensions.

The shut-off valve consists of a steering wheel and a disk, which is controlled by a screw-like rod, moving at right angles to the flow up or down. In the closed position, the disc for closing the flow rests against two surfaces. To keep the liquid in the pipes and to prevent leaks, use the stuffing box, which comes complete with sealing materials.

Despite the breadth of application, the slide gate valve is not always able to perform the task. At low pressures, the device does not have enough force to seal the system, in such cases, valves with grease or wedge valves are installed .

Depending on the environment of use, the shut-off valves are made of various materials. Gate valve, designed for operation in catalytic conduits, is made of low-alloy or stainless steel. With aggressive conditions and significant pressure drops, the use of a vibro-sealing lining and the rejection of the use of austenitic steels are associated.

During the water flushing of the pipelines, the mass valves can give a small leak in the gaskets. However, they should not be tightened, since the devices are not designed to work with water, and to check their tightness can only be in denser streams.

Devices with electric or hydraulic drive are usually used in the work of technological piping of pumping stations, systems designed for receiving and starting separators.
