Fainting: causes and types

Fainting, the reasons of which we will consider below, is a short-term loss of consciousness. It is worth noting that this phenomenon should not be confused with epilepsy, coma, dizziness of the vestibular nature, narcolepsy and other similar conditions.

As statistics show, fainting is quite common, about which about 35% of adults and quite healthy people living on our planet claimed.

Fainting: causes not related to cardiovascular diseases

  1. Vasorepressor syncope. This phenomenon often occurs in response to sudden and violent emotional stress, as well as in those cases when a person is threatened with real or imaginary damage.
  2. Situational fainting. It can arise as a result of the sending of normal functions of the human body (for example, urination).
  3. Fainting with defecation. Most often occurs in the elderly. As a rule, such episodes are not repeated.
  4. Cough fainting. Often occurs due to severe cough in those who suffer from obesity or abuse alcohol (cigarettes).
  5. Fainting on swallowing . It is known about single cases during damage to the esophagus.
  6. Orthostatic hypotension. Occurs because of a venous return or a decrease in the volume of blood circulating in the body.
  7. Loss of consciousness with an overestimated sensitivity of the carotid sinus. Occurs in the background of bradycardia or arterial hypotension.

Fainting: causes related to cardiovascular disease

  1. Reduction of cardiac output. As a rule, such syncope is associated with aortic stenosis, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, dysfunction of valvular prostheses, myxoma of the left atrium, stenosis of the pulmonary artery, etc.
  2. Arrhythmia. Loss of consciousness arises from pronounced bradycardia and tachycardia, which significantly reduce cardiac output.

Fainting: causes of unclear origin

In some cases, modern medicine can not establish the true cause of fainting in humans. However, this does not mean that the patient should not be monitored by the district doctor.
