Diseases of pigeons: treatment and prevention

For such a disease of pigeons as cryptococcosis is characterized by difficulty swallowing and decreased appetite, which can be observed for 1-2 weeks. When the ailment passes into a difficult stage, the feathers on the pigeon's head are glued together by crusts of brownish-gray color. Especially such formations are noticeable under the beak. Often because of these crusts pigeons find it difficult to open it. Near the jaw joint, you can see small seals, with a hazelnut in size. In the oral cavity there is a mucous-damp mass. Because of the difficulties in swallowing food, the birds stop eating. In the future, inflammation affects the esophagus. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to treat this disease and prevent its occurrence.

Inflammation of the eyelid and conjunctiva of the eyes.

Symptoms of the disease are puffiness and redness of the eyelid and conjunctiva, closed eye gap. The pigeon constantly heals his eyes, and he rubs their claws or feathers. Due to the secretion of serous or fibrinous secret from the eyes, the skin around them gradually sticks together and becomes covered with a brown crust. To treat this disease pigeons use tea from Kamala or eye drops that contain an antibiotic. When there are infections that affect the eyes, apply sulfonamides inside.

Colibacteriosis

The disease is caused by a conditionally pathogenic microbe, which is present in the gastrointestinal tract. If the resistance of the body to infections is weakened, then there may be intestinal forms of this anilia, in which nodules (coligranulomatosis) are formed. Especially active intestinal form of colibacteriosis develops against a background of such problems as ascaridosis and coccidiosis. The pigeons suffer from this disease mostly young. The incubation period of the disease does not last long, after which its symptoms quickly appear: the birds lose their appetite, become indifferent to everything, suffer from an intestinal disorder and shortness of breath. Further development of the disease leads to the death of birds. When autopsied on the intestine and liver, you can see the nodes covered with capsules. In order for the treatment of pigeons from this disease to give a positive result, antibiotics with a wide range of action are used. These include biomycin and terramycin with feed (100 mg per 1 kg). In addition, thorough disinfection is carried out. To increase the resistance to this disease, it is necessary to feed birds qualitatively (in accordance with the norms) and include vitamins in their diet.

Tuberculosis.

This disease can also develop in pigeons. Bird tuberculosis is dangerous because it can be transmitted to humans. In humans, its symptoms are skin lesions and the formation of nodules on the mucous membranes. Signs of the disease in birds are quite uncharacteristic: the ailment is accompanied by weakness, fatigue, and sagging of the wings. The plumage acquires a matte shade and ruffles. To test this pigeon disease, a test for tuberculosis has been developed. In the upper part of the century, 0.05 ml of tuberculin is injected intradermally with a syringe. In the presence of infection, you can notice a distinct swelling that appears as a positive reaction to the drug on the 2nd day after the injection. Treatment of birds from tuberculosis is considered inexpedient, as they become carriers of infection, and for a complete cure a lot of time is needed.

Prevention of diseases.

As you know, any sickness is easier to prevent than treat. From the examples given, one can see how different can be the diseases of pigeons and their treatment, the same different can be preventive measures. Here are some of them.

The simplest measure of disease prevention is regular cleaning and disinfection. Many diseases arise due to violation of sanitary norms. Before placing the birds, the equipment and inventory must be thoroughly rinsed with hot solutions with detergents or disinfectants (5% solution of Creolin, 2% soda ash or 1% NaOH). The internal surfaces of the room, in which the birds will be kept, is recommended twice whitewashed with lime. Cleaning and disinfection of the pigeon must be carried out at least once a month. At least once a week, you need to clean the feeders and wash them with a warm 3-4% solution of soda. If infectious diseases occur, then disinfection should be carried out at least twice a week. Also it is necessary to limit contacts of domestic pigeons with wild ones.
