The TV series "The Magnificent Age: Kesem Sultan"

"The Magnificent Age" has become one of the most successful television series shot in Turkey over the past few decades. For four seasons, the whole world, with bated breath, watched how the wives, children and sisters of the great Suleiman fought for power and love.

Shortly after the shooting, the producers of the project decided to withdraw its continuation, but this time the events unfold during the reign of Suleiman's great-great-grandson Sultan Ahmed I.

Contrary to expectations, this teleproject could not reach the level of its predecessor, but it proved very popular in many countries, in particular, in Greece and Russia. For this reason, it was extended for the second season.

Due to the low ratings, the project financing significantly decreased in the second half of the season, which is very noticeable in the scenery, as well as the costumes of the actors. However, the producers hope that the second season will be more successful. But the fans are full of doubts, as in the last series of "Kesem" the most vivid characters were killed: Safie, Halima and Dilruba Sultan, as well as Iskander, Davud and Zulfikar Pasha.

Plot

Sultan Mehmed III in his old age began to fear that his eldest son Mahmud would overthrow him. For this reason, he orders to kill Shehzadeh.

Time passes and the sultan begins to think about the murder of his middle son - Ahmed. However, the mentor of the young man - Dervish Mehmed Pasha, after learning about this, pours poison to the master and he dies, and the sultan becomes quite young Ahmed.

Not having heirs, the young sultan preserves his younger brother Mustafa's life. Because of this, the mother of Mustafa (Halima) and his elder sister (Dilruba Sultan) begin to weave intrigues to raise the boy to the throne.

On the other hand, his own grandmother (Safiye Sultan) intrigues against Ahmed. After all, she managed at one time to save her youngest son, Iskander, from execution, and now, when he grew up and grew up, the old valida dreams of elevating him to the throne.

Unfortunately, the mother of Ahmed I is Handan, the woman is weak and short-sighted. She does not have enough strength and resources to fight with strong opponents. However, in the harem to the young sultan gets Greek Anastasia. Ahmed falls in love with her and makes her a favorite. Bold Anastasia, who received the nickname Kesem, quickly finds supporters and becomes not only the faithful wife of the Sultan and the mother of his children, but more than once rescues her husband from his relatives.

With the death of Ahmed I, it is Kesem who fights for the lives of his sons and despite numerous losses, raises his son Murad to the throne.

Dilruba Sultan: the story of the heroine's life in "Kesem"

Dilruba, according to the television series, was the middle child of Sultan Mehmed III's favorite - Halima Sultan. After her elder brother was killed, and the son of the other wife of the padishah ascended to the throne, the girl began to help the mother to raise the younger brother Mustafa to the throne.

In this Dilruba Sultan (photo below) showed incredible resourcefulness. Because of her tricks, Kesem and the two sons of Ahmed I nearly died. In addition, she became an indirect cause of suicide Handan Sultan. However, all this not only did not bring her brother closer to the throne, but, on the contrary, contributed to his imprisonment in the "golden cage" where he lived for many years, unable to communicate with the outside world.

When Dilruba grew up, her mother wanted to marry her daughter to the Great Vizier of the Ottoman Empire. Realizing that her fiancé is a faithful servant of Kesem (otherwise he would not have received this post), the young sultana, in spite of the mother's opinion, chooses her husband herself. Her chosen one is Dawood Pasha. He turns out to be a faithful servant of his wife and makes every effort to elevate her brother to the throne.

After Ahmed's death, Mustafa rises to the throne, and Kesem and her children are out of work. Moreover, knowing that Ahmed's favorite is enjoyed by the people with great love, Dilruba and her husband try to kill her several times. In retaliation, Kesem takes the sultan's hostage and, blackmailing Davud Pasha, saves the children and raises his adopted son Osman to the throne.

Halima, Dilruba and Dawood do not accept defeat and are waiting for a chance to get even.

Taking advantage of the fact that Safiy Sultan disagrees with Kesem and Osman, the conspirators with the help of the Janissaries raise a riot and kill the new sultan, once again elevating Mustafa to the throne. In addition, Dilruba Sultan orders to kill all the children of Kesem, so that there remain no other pretenders to the throne. However, the Sultanate manages to save his sons and she prepares the overthrow of the madman Mustafa from the throne.

Initially, Kesem forces Halima to sign an order for the execution of Davud Pasha. And then she sends people who kill Dilroub and her mother, and Mustafa again gets into the "golden cage", where he lives until the end of his days.

Dilruba Sultan: biography of a woman who became her prototype

In reality Halima Sultan and Mehmed III also had a daughter. But history has not kept her name. It is only known that after the death of Sultan Ahmed I, one of the active participants in the struggle for the throne of the Ottoman Empire was the husband of a young sultan, Davud Pasha.

More information about the fate of this sultan has not reached our days. Since in reality her mother Halima was not killed by the order of Kesem, but she safely passed her widow's age in the Old Palace. It is likely that after the execution of her husband, Dilruba lived there or remarried.

Melisa Elaida Olcianik is a young actress who played Dilroub in the television series

During the first 20 episodes, the starring Turkish actress Melisa Elaida Olcianik performed the role of the daring Dilrouba.

Despite the young age (at the time of filming she was 13 years old), the girl was able to create a fairly multifaceted image on the screen. Her heroine both liked and irritated viewers.

Oikyu Karael - the performer of the role of an adult sultan

Beginning with the 21st series and until the end of the first season, the Turkish model and actress Oikyu Karael began to play, having matured Dilroub.

Connoisseurs of Turkish cinema know that before "Kesem," Oikyu managed to withdraw in several projects: "Dirty money, lying love" and "Nausea."

Although at first many spectators were indignant at the fact that the grown-up Dilruba Sultan (actress Oikyu Karael) is completely unlike herself as a young (Melisa Elaida Oljanik), later they loved the game of a new performer.

Among the innovations that Oikyu introduced into the image of her character, was the irony with which Dilruba reacted to her mother's comments. This actress just won the fans, in addition, her soulful game, in the romantic scenes with Dawood also did not remain unnoticed by the audience.

Interesting facts

  • For historians, it remains a mystery why the name of the only daughter of Mehmed III and Halima is not known. According to one version, she was a weak-willed person and served only as a pawn in her mother's intrigues. In connection with which her name was not even mentioned in most chronicles. According to another version, there was a very clever and cunning Dilruba Sultan and really made a lot of efforts to damage Kesem. Therefore, having come to power, the sultan's first order ordered to erase the name of the rival from all documents. By the way, the second theory is more like the truth, because the court chroniclers who carefully wrote down all the representatives of the Osman dynasty in the registers could not simply forget to name the Sultan's daughter if they were not ordered.
  • The series is presented as an average child Halima - Dilruba Sultan. History, however, says that the second child of Sultan Mehmed III's son was Mustafa's son, and the daughter was born last.
  • Oikyu Karel in her childhood was very shy about her appearance and to overcome complexes, she decided to become a model, and after that she became an actress.
  • Actress Karael has a twin sister named Ezgi.

What was really and what the daughter's name was Halima Sultan, historians can not say for sure. But the filmmakers have already found the answer to this question by introducing into the plot of the first season "Kesem" a heroine named Dilruba Sultan. It is not known whether she really was, but the version suggested in the television series was very popular with the audience and many hope that in the new season Dilroub will "rise up" in an unusual way.
