Edward Lidskalninsh: biographical information

The man, famous for the whole world as the chief architect and builder of an unusual stone structure, was born in a rural area near Riga. At the age of 26 Edward Lidskalnins fell in love with a girl from his village and proposed to her. His lover, Agnes Skuffs, first agreed to a proposal for marriage, and then refused. The upset and insulted man collected the last money and left Latvia forever for America.

Ten years after the emigration, he acquired land and began building a structure that neighbors will call the Coral Castle by Edward Lidskalnins. The material for the building was clumps of coral limestone. "Gloomy Ed," as he was nicknamed him for being unsociable, always worked alone and only at night. He did not use any special equipment and modern construction devices. At the same time, the Coral Castle by Edward Lidskalninsha is growing before our eyes.

"Coral Castle" or "Stone Gate"?

The construction of an unusual structure was started in 1920. Ten years later, when the complex of buildings became an unofficial attraction, an apartment house was planned to be erected on a nearby plot. Learning about this, Edward Lidskalnins quickly hired a single truck and in a few calls moved his creation to another place. Loading the stone blocks of their owner performed individually, without the use of special equipment. An interesting fact - the modern name "Coral Castle" by Edward Lidskalninsha was given to the construction by the neighbors of the master. The author himself often called his offspring "The Stone Gate".

Edward died in 1951 because of a serious illness. His main secret, he did not disclose. Until his death, the architect-wizard remained closed and unsociable. Sometimes he said that he opened the secrets of the universe and created his castle, using the experience of the ancient Egyptians - the builders of the pyramids. After the death of the creator, a lot of examinations were carried out, but it was not possible to understand how the Coral Castle was built by Edward Lidskalnins. The photo of this unusual structure does not fully convey its scale, the weight of some blocks reaches 5 tons. Today the "castle" is turned into a tourist attraction and is open for visiting.
