"Confrontation with the Abyss": actors playing the anthem of life

1998 jokingly can be called apocalyptic, during this period in the big cinema thanks to several directors came the end of the world. Such a curiosity - with a difference of only two months in the rental of two paintings on the same topic, with a fairly similar story, but with a completely different fate. In July, American hire blew up Michael Bay's Armageddon, but a little earlier, in May, the spectator managed to scare the Mimi Leder movie "The Clash with the Abyss" (actors: Robert Duvall , Elijah Wood, Tea Leoni, Morgan Freeman, Vanessa Redgrave).

Plot

A colossal comet, which was first discovered by an ordinary schoolboy-teenager Leo Biderman (Elijah Wood), is inexorably approaching the Earth. The consequences of the collision will be global and irreversible. The international community is forming a Russian-American crew to launch it on the space shuttle "Messiah". The task of astronauts is extremely clear - to eliminate the celestial body, which threatens to destroy all of humanity. An interesting novelty of the film "Collision with the Abyss" actors and all participants of the crew consider the construction of the Ark, this measure of security is assessed in two ways and the viewer. It turns out that the Americans allow the "Messiah" mission to fail and, therefore, build a shelter in which 200,000 people are selected, among them teachers, scientists, engineers, doctors, artists and, of course, the military and government members.

Mankind does not give up

Simultaneously, the astronauts manage to land on the surface of the celestial body and place several nuclear bombs there. But from the explosion, the comet is divided into two unequal pieces. One, having fallen into the Atlantic Ocean, causes a tsunami, which has never before been seen, which practically destroys the coastline of the United States. The second piece, bigger, still in space, and the astronauts left in orbit can destroy the threat. Such a depressing synopsis precisely characterizes the drama "Collision with the Abyss". Actors and roles, accurately selected by the creators, along with the musical accompaniment are a great addition to the general plot outset.

Desperate step towards realism

The film "Clash with the Abyss," whose actors, like the crew, are of international origin, supported the cult of the cosmic threat, carefully nurtured by the American film industry. To work on the project, Leder and the producers Joan Bradshaw and Spielberg approached with all responsibility and seriousness. To work on the script, they attracted all kinds of consultants, so that the visual part and the technical side of the filming looked as realistic as possible. Venerable astronomers Eugene and Carolyn Shoemakers, a dog who was eaten on celestial bodies, became the main advisers of the film "Collision with the Abyss". Actors who play the role of astronauts, floating in the air, sometimes forgot and frolicked, like small children. But when I had to shoot episodes in real spacesuits, the fun was diminished: not only were they terribly heavy, they also caused claustrophobia in actors. To create not only a realistic, but fascinating spectacle, the production director of the Leslie Dilly film had to be guided not only by reliable scientific knowledge, but also by his own wild fantasy.

Star cast

Such a stellar casting can not boast of any powerful blockbuster. Robert Dewal was so good that he set the pace for the younger generation of actors. Taya Leoni pleasantly surprised both the viewer and the prejudiced critics, playing with inspiration and soulfulness. Very young Elijah Wood together with Lily Sobieski played reliably. Surprised and pleased with the viewer James Cromwell, Vanessa Redgrave, Maximilian Schell and John Favreau, who, having confirmed their professionalism, literally erased the definition of the episodicity of their roles. Morgan Freeman, as usual, was out of competition, a great actor.

Hymn of Life

But with all the seriousness and scale of the work done on the reliable "space" part of the picture, "The Clash with the Abyss" (actors all confirm this fact as one), first of all - drama, and only after - a catastrophe. Thanks to the efforts of writers Michael Tolkien and Bruce Joel Rubin, the apocalypse and cosmic threat have become the backdrop for several human tragedies. For this reason, for many viewers, the film seems to be a chamber, philosophizing and indecently sluggish story about the end of the world. This became the plus of the brainchild of Mimi Leder, and his minus. The movie "Collision with the Abyss," whose actors are imbued with the fate of their characters, despite the visible entourage of the film-catastrophe, can safely be called the anthem of life. Through the frames a moral message slips, saying that the real person remains the man in the most extreme situation. There is a place in the film for patriotism, and heroism, and love, which will live as long as at least one person remains alive. The authors succeeded in capturing the main picture: to engage a wide spectator audience not by an intriguing plot, but by the whole story told, from the first to the last minute of the time-keeping.
