Regatta is what?

The championship in races on yachts, rowing and motor vessels is called "regatta". The meaning of the word is borrowed from the Italian regata (competition), the root is riga (row, line). The term jacht (chase) was used by the Dutch, already in the old days their fleet of boats pursued the pirates.

Competition against a background of fun

Today, competitions are part of corporate media activity. A distinctive feature of them - a beautiful, to the smallest detail stylish in color and design spectacle. In the network access are regularly posted reports of the events of the world competition. Regatta, a photo of which conveys the spirit and importance of friendly starts (awards ceremonies, gala concerts, fireworks), is very popular. The standard for yachtsmen is the oldest race of Coves (between the southern coast of England and the Isle of Wight in the Te-Solent Strait), the Antigua Week (Caribbean Islands), Sydney Hobart (Tasman Sea). Such events are an excellent platform for creating a network for the development of sailing.

Why sailing?

Regardless of the location of the water area, the sailing community is distinguished for its benevolence and hospitality. Here we are always happy to help feel the pride of achievements. Skill level

Sailing attracts both amateurs and professionals. Profi take part in regattas of different plan: for short distances, transoceanic, round-the-world. The ships of the participants are impressed by high technologies and high-speed qualities.

Beginning sailors understand the real perspective. World-level competitions and interviews of famous sailors are inspired by their own exploits. Yacht clubs give such an opportunity, they conduct launches in the domestic waters. When the habitual water area becomes small, the sea opens - international competitions. The next step can be a serious round-the-world race. All amateur regattas are accompanied by mentors.

Types of sailing races

Starts take place in formal conditions, where common rules, schedules, procedures are adopted. In the competition, the regatta is classified into three formats:

  1. Flotilla is a universal regatta, competitions are held for individual subgroups according to the rule each for themselves.
  2. Team race - the format is distinguished by a special tactic and sporting intrigue. In the composition can participate 2, 3 and 4 yachts.
  3. Match-racing, or a relay race for a short distance between two identical yachts of the same design. In a complex technical form, there are pro-sailors who have not a weak dynamic of thinking. Passion of passions in the opposition of crews, skilful possession of the ship and tactical techniques make the competitions spectacular. The meaning of the Italian word riga and the Dutch term jacht, together reflect the meaning of the form: race in a straight line.

Groups of the flotilla

The fleet is divided into two categories: mixed and monotypic. The latter is easy to judge and organize. To the finish line the crew with the highest level of preparation comes first. Often the sight of this regatta is found at short and olympic distances.

In a mixed race to cross the finish line - does not mean to win. For the conduct of the competition participants are allocated to divisions with similar technical characteristics. Also, in order to balance the odds, a handicap is used, or judging by the handicap method. The champion is determined by the rating system. At the end of the distance, the yacht index, its forehead, and power are calculated.

Regatta is a race with a lot of nominations, so sailors and amateurs have a special interest in it.

Sailing regatta: crew

A single crew often goes out into the open ocean and round-the-world voyage. This is a technically difficult form, since several people are employed by one sailor. Domestic concerns are not ruled out, so there is no time for loners to rest. Using the autopilot, you can ensure a half hour sleep. During the competition, strict observance of safety rules is necessary. Participants are extremely cautious, they use insurance in their work, especially in bad weather. The distant regatta is a difficult experience for any pros.

Competitions paired crews take place in the open waters of the ocean. The duration of the swim is calculated in months, so the psychological excerpt is especially important. Security measures are the same as in solitary form. Skippers-professionals are also involved here.

Regatta full crew starts at distances of different sizes. The number of sailors depends on the design of the yacht. On board sometimes from 8 to 30 people.

Distance: race up to 1000 km

The regatta is held for a short distance in bays and harbor harbors. In time, the competition takes several hours. Races are especially keen on the audience, because everything is seen in detail, which is not possible in other forms.

The route is classic: on the waterway, obstacles are overcome in the form of loops and triangles, their buoys are buoys. The competition is tactical, any miss in the beginning of the race is reflected in the result. The length of the route varies from several cableways to several kilometers (1 cable is 185.2 meters).

Participation is accepted by vessels of different designs, here you can see catamarans and yachts with a shoe. Boats of decent dimensions for passage are allocated more time.

Competitions in the domestic water area, in the zone of visibility from the coast are called coastal regatta. Sailors cross the distance from 30 to 350 km. Usually it's a six-hour race on a circular route: where the start, there's the finish.

Long voyage

The regatta is a symbol of comradely competition. Yachtsmen, risking their lives, go through the ocean, they are driven by expansion and the passion of conquering the vast abyss.

  • Transoceanic . Despite equipping racing yachts with modern materials and technologies, the course in the ocean does not become easier. Weather in the vast waters is the dominant feature of the competition. Sometimes the always desired wind-helper turns out to be a pest. A technically difficult distance (from 1300 to 3000 km) can be accomplished by an experienced sailor on a high-level vessel. The route runs through the waters of the Atlantic and Pacific. The Ocean Regatta is a competition for the brave, honor and glory awaits those who overcome it.
  • Round the world . The passage of a distance of 40,000 kilometers from skippers takes months. The rules of competition prohibit a long stay in the port cities. Following strict regulations, seafarers spend most of their time in open waters. The round-the-world regatta is the pinnacle of mastery in yachting. After completion of the route, the brave heroes become masters of the highest category.
  • Offshore . Feature of the regatta - Route, it lies beyond the visibility of the shore. The length varies from 250 to 1600 km. The competitions are based on a strategy that depends on the wind, so seamen choose an advantageous course in an arbitrary performance. The possibility of self-expression does not fall on coastal starts and in the harbor.

Every year sailing develops, social events are held wherever there is a water area. Regatta on yachts each time gives something new, exciting. She challenges everyone who is ready to play with her on the water field.
