Collegiality is a specific managerial method by which the functions of the management of a particular organization, institution or even an entire industry are placed not on one particular person, but on a group of appointed or elected persons who have the same voting rights.

History of collegiality

Turning to the history of this concept, one can see that it originates from the Great October Revolution, when the meaning of the word "collegiality" was equated with the universal method of government, right up to the army. However, since 1918, Lenin has launched a struggle against such an understanding of collegiality and has chosen a direction for unity of command.

Today, collegiality is the defining principle in organizing the activities of various bodies, including judicial ones. In this case, in any operational apparatus, the so-called "principle of one-man management" must be strictly carried out.

Unity of collegiality and one-man management

The principle of collegiality and unity of command is realized in the direction of overcoming authoritarianism and subjectivity in management, for example, the pedagogical process. In general management, it is very important to build on the knowledge and experience of colleagues with the appropriate organization of their activities aimed at developing management rules with subsequent discussion and adoption of optimal solutions.

Interaction of collegiality and one-man management

In this aspect, collegiality is not an exception to the personal responsibility of individual members of the collective for the task entrusted to them. By means of one-man management, from the management point of view, discipline and order are provided with a clear delineation and observance of the powers of all participants in any process.

The collegiality is a high priority at the stage of discussion with subsequent decision-making. The need for one-man management arises at the next stage - the implementation of decisions taken earlier.

In management, one-man management and collegiality are a reflection of the unity of opposites. So, with the help of one-man management, it is possible to achieve efficiency in the implementation of decisions, and collegiality is characterized by some "slowness". Thus, in the implementation of tactical actions, it is advisable to use one-man management, and in strategic tactics, the described method of control.

The principle of collegiality

Under the principles of management are meant the basic patterns, ideas and rules of conduct of managers of different levels for the implementation of managerial functions. These are certain requirements and norms that guide the employees of the system, including the management of the organization.

Postulates in management

The basic principles of management assume:

  1. Skillful use and a combination of collegiality and one-man management. At the same time, collegiality provides for the adoption of a collective decision, based on the opinions of managers at various levels.
  2. Scientific validity in management. This is the principle, the use of which involves the implementation of all management actions based on the use of approaches and scientific methods. Relying on them, it must meet the basic requirements of science.
  3. Planning is the principle that establishes the main directions, tasks and plans for the development of the organization for the future.
  4. A combination of responsibility, rights and responsibilities. Within the framework of this principle, each individual entity in the organization may be endowed with certain powers and be responsible for the fulfillment of the tasks assigned to it.
  5. Motivation is represented by the principle that the effectiveness of the program of motivation and motivation of people to work depends on the thoroughness of the implementation of the system of punishments and rewards by achieving the goal set for the individual and organization. Moreover, it is a combination of external and internal forces. They induce a person to carry out certain actions. At the same time, boundaries and forms of activity are defined that give the motivation an orientation with an orientation toward achieving specific goals. It also affects human behavior through the use of many factors that are able to change under the influence of feedback from the individual.
  6. Stimulation is the process of encouraging people's motivation. It is one of the means by which motivation can be directly implemented.
  7. Democratization of management is represented by the principle of participation of all employees in the management of the enterprise. This principle of implementing collegial activities ensures equal and active participation in it of employees and all other members of the team.
  8. Systematicity is a principle that implies a close interconnection of economic, socio-cultural and technological managerial decisions. It is the basis for decision-making and interaction. Systematicity is a unity that has a regular location.
  9. Efficiency is based on the principle of achieving goals in a fairly short time and with low losses.
  10. The main link is the principle of solving and finding the most important task among many similar ones.
  11. Optimality serves as the principle of the correlation of centralization with democratization, the combination of creative activity of workers of lower rank and leadership (known as "democratic centralism").
  12. Responsibility and control over the implementation of decisions are a principle of verification and constant observation for the purpose of supervision or verification.

Conclusion

It should be noted that collegiality can improve the objectivity and validity of all decisions taken. However, they can be adopted slowly enough. Therefore, the most correct solution can be the association of collegiality with one-man management.
