Church Orthodox holiday on August 24. What holiday is August 24?

In the last summer month many historical and religious events are celebrated, including the Orthodox holiday on August 24 - the martyr Evpatia Kolovrat (Evpah). But the month is rich not only by significant dates, after all from August, 14 till August, 27th the Uspensky post lasts which all orthodox Christians adhere.

From the history

The Martyr Archdeacon Evple lived and served in Sicily in the city of Katana, during the reign of Diocletian and Maximian. He was a fearless preacher who did not part with the Gospel, carrying his sermons about Christ to unenlightened Gentiles. He was not afraid of persecution and traveled around the cities.

During one of the Gospel readings, when Evpel communicated with the pagans surrounding him, he was seized and handed over to the local ruler, before whom the archdeacon as a true Christian denounced idolatry. Saint Euple was subjected to cruel torments and, being seriously wounded, imprisoned for seven days. All this time he did not stop praying, and the Lord in the help of the martyr created directly in the dungeon a life-giving source of water, so that he would not die of thirst.

At the end of the imprisonment, Evpah was again brought to the judge, before whom the already strengthened and inspired archdeacon secondarily confirmed his faith in Jesus Christ and fearlessly accused the ruler of the shed blood of innocent Christians. For this martyr was brutally executed by cutting off his head. He went there with the Gospel hanged on his neck. Even his last moments of life Evple did not stop reading the Holy Scripture, and many people then accepted the faith in Christ. Orthodox Christians honor the memory of the martyr Archdeacon Evpl, an Orthodox holiday on August 24 in honor of which is celebrated by the solemn church service.

Folk tradition

According to the popular legend, Evpatius Kolovrat devoted his life to the conversion of the Gentiles to the Christian faith. He never parted with the Gospel, explaining to the people its meaning. After the execution of the martyr August 24 was considered a terrible day. People said that a ghostly white horse wandered around the swamps in search of his lost rider. He galloped all day, and at night tore graveyard graves, trying to find the master. And no one managed to catch a white horse. People believed that this day over the cemeteries and marshes, like wandering lights, the souls of innocently slain fly.

On the day of Euplah, according to the folk calendar, it was decided to start knitting winter things. The Orthodox holiday on August 24 is a day of commemoration of the martyr Archdeacon Eupatius Kolovrat, who until the last minute of his life taught repentance and carried people faith in Christ.

Day of Remembrance of the Holy Martyrs Theodore and Basil

We're talking about August 24th. What holiday does the Orthodox Church celebrate this day? On this day honor the memory of the Martyrs Theodore and Basil (11th century), the relics of which are in the Near Caves of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. Saint Theodore sacrificed his fortune to the needy and went to the monastery, where the Reverend Basil also stayed. In moments of despondency and sorrow, Basil supported Theodore, not allowing him to succumb to the demonic temptation, and helped to free himself from passionate love of money. Theodore repented of sin, and since then they have become close friends.

When, under the guise of an angel, the demon again appeared to the monk and announced where the valuables were buried so that he left the monastery and returned to the world, his companions dug in the found silver and even under torture did not reveal their secret to the ruling prince Mstislav.

The saints Theodore and Basil were tormented to death, and the prince himself pierced the last with an arrow. Dying, Basil predicted his death from the same arrow, and said was fulfilled in the Vladimir fortress during the internecine battle in 1099. Wounded in the chest, Mstislav said that he was dying for the Martyrs of Theodore and Basil.

Who is remembered in August

The Orthodox holiday on August 24 is also a day when they remember with love and respect the martyr Sosanna. Virgo Sosanna was a relative of the Pope, was raised in piety and Christianity and preferred to carnal marriage service to God. For this, the persecutors of Christians were cruelly punished, and the relics of Saint Sosanna are now in Rome.

August 24 (August 11, old style) pay tribute to the Monk Theodore, Prince Ostrozhsky, resting in the distant caves of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. In 1386, the Ostroh District was assigned to him, and the prince deserved notoriety not only with his remarkable military exploits, but above all with the protection of Orthodoxy in Volhynia. Leaving everything, at a fairly venerable age the Monk Theodore took tonsure and with the name of Theodosius until his death (in 1483) served the Lord in prayers and fasting.

Assumption fast

In the last month of the summer, not only the church and Orthodox festivals fall on August 24 and other dates, but also the day of the Assumption of the Blessed Lady, our Mother of God, whose omen is a fortnightly strict post.

It is also a preparation for a significant date. The name of the holiday comes from the word "falling asleep", because the Mother of God seemed to fall asleep for three days, after which she resurrected by the will of the Lord and ascended to heaven.

Just as on August 24, what holiday does it cost without a special, solemn service in the Holy Russian Orthodox Church? It's just impossible to imagine. The Orthodox calendar, holidays and posts in August on which are marked by special dates, shows that the incessant feast of the Assumption falls on August 28. And the last one in a year, the multi-day fast is observed by all true Orthodox people.

Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

After the death of Jesus Christ, for many years (according to various sources, from 10 to 22 years), His Most-Pure Mother was in Jerusalem, where she lived in the house of the Apostle John the Theologian, whom Jesus commissioned Her before His execution.

She often visited the places where Jesus was crucified, died and rose. The Most Holy Theotokos prayed in tears, remembering the sufferings of the Son, and rejoiced in the place of His Ascension, asking that Christ would rather receive Her to Himself. Having become a common Mother for all the disciples of Christ, She spent time in prayers and instructive conversations. Even Christians from other countries came to see the Mother of God and listen to Her words.

At the end of the earthly life of the Most Holy Mary, the Lord Himself appeared to Her, accompanied by the angels of heaven, to receive Her immaculate soul. Leaving the earth, she told the apostles that she would always be a prayer-book for them before God. And the Lord appointed the Most Holy Mother above His angels.

The pure body of the Mother of God by Her will was buried in the cave of the Garden of Gethsemane, next to the graves of Her parents and the righteous Joseph. And since then many miracles have occurred at the burial site: the diseases were healed, the demons were cast out, and the blind saw through the touch of the Virgin Mary's bed. And in our days we feel the invisible presence of the Mother of God, and in moments of sorrow and despair we ask her protection: "Holy Mother of God, help us!"
