Belbek River in the Crimea: description, photo

The south-west of the Crimea is famous for the Belbek river. It rightfully bears the title of the most full flow of the peninsula. The Belbek River originates from the main mountain range of the Crimea. It is there that the water from the karst springs provides the power of the watercourse. Let's take a closer look at its features.

Hydronym

In the translation from the Turkic language, the name of the river means "strong or strong back". Why do such associations arise? Belbek, of course, deserved a similar name. And all because during its spills it becomes a stormy stream with a strong current and as if on a tree trees, torn from the ground along with the root, are carried away. Also, the Belbek River in the Crimea has another name - Kabarta, which means "puffed up" or "swollen." The scientist PS Pallas tells a legend explaining the origin of this toponym by the fact that in the upper reaches of the watercourse Kabardians allegedly dwelt. But there is also another option. It can be said to be even more logical than the previous one, in translation it means "the main narrow passage in the mountain".

Features of the upper reaches of the river

Upper Belbek is located on the slopes of the Crimean mountain range, more precisely, in the north-west. Here the riverbed is formed by two streams: Ozenbash and Managotra. These are real mountain rivers, which represent violent streams. Quite narrow, they swiftly carry their waters among stony slopes. The Belbek river, before it begins to flow between the Main and Inner Ranges of the Crimean Mountains, appears as a standard mountain stream with a rapid current. Not far from the settlement Golubinka the riverbed increases significantly, being about 40-50 meters wide. Belbek becomes narrower at the intersection of the Inner Range of the mountains. Here, a proud river basin forms an incredible beauty Belbek Canyon.

Description of the valley

The river valley in the most narrow place is about 300 m wide. The depth here reaches 160 m. On the right side of the river valley, archaeologists have discovered two grottoes, which were given the names Syuyren-I and Syuyren-II. In these caves there were found places of Cro-Magnon people of the late Paleolithic period. These settlements were engaged in hunting, gathering and fishing. These facts are confirmed by various remains and bones of water representatives found during the study of this area.

Since 1969 the Belbek Canyon has been recognized as a natural monument and is becoming one of the most attractive sights created by nature. The valley of the river expands only closer to the sea.

Characteristics of the river in the lower reaches

In the lower reaches, the river overcomes global drifts from clay, which slows down the run of its waters.

Since the peninsula has exits to the two seas, it is very interesting, where the Belbek River flows into? The watercourses of Crimea can refer to two basins: the Azov or Black Sea. The Belbek River mouth is near the village of Lyubimovka, a few kilometers from Sevastopol Bay. It is here that the river flows into the Black Sea. The bed of the reservoir in this place is more like a ravine. In width it reaches 25-30 meters.

In 1980 the canal of Belbek was divided into two. This was due to the fact that the river often spilled. But after a while spills have become an infrequent phenomenon, and at the moment water is only in one valley.

Tributaries of the Belbek River

The largest tributary of Belbek is Kokkozka watercourse. In length it is about 18 km. And also its tributaries are the rivers Auzun-Uzen and Sary-Su. The first flows between the Boyko Mountain and the Ai-Petrinskaya Yaila. This place is also called the Grand Canyon. Sary-Su is in the crevice, which is considered the Small Canyon. Here, this tributary turns into a waterfall flowing through mossy rocks. It is called the Silver Stream and is considered to be the quietest waterfall, since, draining over the moss, it does not create almost no noise.

Animal world

As for the representatives of the flora of the most full-flowing river of the Crimea, its famous inhabitant can be called a brook trout. This beautiful fish, covered with fine shiny scales, each flake as if surrounded by a white outline. Trout is a predator. It's pretty hard to see, because she's very shy. The beloved place of this trout is the Belbek river in the upper reaches. Most often, it can be seen under the small waterfalls. Usually trout reaches a length of 25-35 centimeters. However, rare specimens of a larger size are sometimes found.

sights

The Belbek River is famous for its unique natural monument, such as the Belbek Canyon. Also in the valley of the watercourse there is a medieval fortress of Suyren. It was partially destroyed in 1475 by the Turkish invaders. Only small fragments of walls and a tower have been preserved from the fortress, but many tourists still want to see this structure with their own eyes. Also not far from it is located no less remarkable place - the monastery of Chelter-Koba, which is one of the famous cave monasteries of Crimea.

In the upper reaches of the most full-flowing river of the Crimea in 1964 a hydrotechnical complex was built. It has three reservoirs: on the river Biyuk-Uzenbash, on the river Managotra and on the stream Karstov.
