Be careful, wrecker! Fighting the May Beetles

May beetle or horsetail is an ambiguous representative of the world of insects: someone excites delight in someone, and someone has tears. For example, children catch him in joy. A living "toy" so interestingly tickles the palm and unusually rustles in the matchbox. However, gardeners and truck farmers are far from joking. These insects bring so much harm to them that fighting with beetles in May is a "matter of honor" for every summer resident.

What you need to know about them

May crunches, in particular their ill-fated larvae, cause great damage to different garden crops. For example, larvae eat a young vineyard, and an adult beetle gnaws the trunk of a tree in a spiral, inflicting serious damage on it: when the horseman goes around the trunk in a circle, the tree will die. The favorite delicacy of these parasites is the leaves of fruit and ordinary trees. In general, the invasion of May beetles occurs annually. But the peak of their multiplicity happens about every 5 years. The beetle of May received this name because its flights fall on the last spring month, lasting from 20 to 50 days. If a cold snap occurs in the region, or spring is expected to be late, flights are postponed until June-July. Fighting the May bugs is a permanent "migraine" gardener, because, as it turned out, the collection of these insects gives little results. But progress does not slow down, and people came up with a lot of ways to destroy these pests. Here are some of them. Fighting beetles-bunches

  1. Try to catch pests in the light. Arrange the trap in an open area so that the beetles can see it without hindrance. Pull the rope between the trees, and hang a white sheet on it. When it gets dark, install the included fluorescent lamp so that the fabric is completely brightly lit. Notice that the males of the horsemen will not fly to the light, but will crawl. They will be stirred and rustled in the grass. You will only have to collect insects in a bottle, and then burn in the stove. By the way, females are indifferent to this trap, but without males they still can not give a new offspring of larvae!
  2. Fighting the May bugs, or rather, with their larvae will be very effective, if you have the opportunity at your dacha site to breed chickens and hang birdhouses. When the land is plowed in spring, release the chickens. For them, the larvae of the Khrushchevs are an exquisite delicacy. Starlings are not inferior to chickens in the dexterity of eating these pests.
  3. In shops special means are being sold against these insects, for example, "Antichrusch", "Zemlin" or "Aktara". Remember, the fight with the May beetles is strictly according to the instructions attached to these drugs. You can also try using common mustard. She excites the larvae wonderfully. Sow it under the trees and between the rows of strawberries.
  4. All truck farmers know that lupine is the strongest poison for the larvae of the horsemen. Sow them a hotbed of defeat. The mechanism of action is this: weeds do not grow on the lupine crops, which means that the larvae, besides lupine, will have nothing to eat. So they will find their own death.
  5. If the larvae of May beetles annoy you on beds with potatoes, then prepare a manganese solution. Dilute five grams of potassium permanganate in one liter of water and pour this mixture under the potato sprouts. Good luck to you!
