Autonomer of the USSR: dimensions, total

The total number of self-propelled vehicles in pre-revolutionary Russia was very small. So, even in Moscow by 1914 the number of officially designed gasoline cars was only 2,200 pieces.

After the October Revolution, cars did not increase much, so there was enough signage for registration of vehicles, and each city could determine their appearance independently. However, at the very end of the 1920s, a real bus started in the country, and some numbers on the number were already missing.

Number format 1931 year

In 1931, the autonomy of the USSR was reduced to a single standard, compulsory for all regions of the country.

Now a white metal plaque was fixed on the machine , on which a single letter and four numbers were printed in black on the dash-hyphen-black paint. For example, G-41-73.

However, in this form registration numbers lasted only three years.

Registration mark of 1934

In 1934 all motorists of the country for six months were obliged to exchange the old license plate for a new, more informative one. At that time the country was conditionally divided into forty-five regions - the Dortrans with its capitals, whose name, according to the updated standard, was indicated at the bottom of the plate. In addition, the alphabetic index was canceled, it was replaced by a figure. That is now the autonomy of the USSR looked like this: 1-23-45 MOSCOW.

The sign could contain four figures, if the number of cars in the region was not enough. The color of the tablet remained the same: black indices on a white background.

But also in this form the registration "tin can" did not last long.

Car numbers of the 1936 standard

Literally two years after the update of the numbers, the owners of the car again had to remove obsolete signs from their cars and attach new ones, which corresponded to the latest standards.

This time the plates changed quite strongly. Now the numbers have become a kind of "negative": the main background is black, and the letters with the numbers are white. The very form of the inscription has also changed. Now the autonomy of the USSR (photo below) should have necessarily contained two pairs of digital indexes, separated by a line, and instead of the name of Dortrans, there were only two letters that should have indicated the car's belonging to a particular region.

In addition, the front and rear plates differ in appearance and size. The front number had an elongated form, on which all six indices were inscribed in one line: AB 56-78. The rear sign is almost square, the upper line was occupied by letters, and the lower one by numbers.

By the way, it was with this standard and right up to our days that it was decided in the letter designations never to use letters again: E, L, L, N, Z.

Black-and-white autonomers of the standard of 1936 lasted for 10 years with almost no updates. The only change touched the rear "tin can": if before the war a pair of letters were located exactly in the center of the sign, then they were moved to the left.

Autonomy of the USSR in 1946

After the war with the registration numbers began a complete mess. A huge number of civilian vehicles with the advent of wartime was transferred for the needs of the army, respectively, and they were already registered under military numbers for registration. After the victory, the surviving equipment returned "to a citizen". Only here the old "pre-war" documents to restore anew was very problematic. Also in the country there was a lot of trophy unaccounted for transport.

In short, the autonomy of the USSR was urgently required to lead to a common standard, which was done in 1946.

The form of the tablets has not changed, but this time they have become yellow, with black indices. In addition, the alphabetic characters in the new version were much smaller in size than the figures, so they began to write on the front number in the upper left corner, in the back they remained in the middle.

Cars with yellow signs rode the Soviet Union until the end of the fifties, while the intensive development of the country's road network did not lead to the fact that in some regions the alphanumeric combinations were completely exhausted. Numbers for new cars began to be missed, and with this it was necessary to do something urgently.

GOST 1959

In 1959, a new standard for the autonomy of the USSR appeared.

The dimensions of the plates remained unchanged, but the registration sign changed. As on the pre-war sample, white letters and numbers were applied to the black background.

On the front number, the letters have moved from the upper left to the lower right corner. Decipher the region to which the car belongs, it became much simpler: its name was denoted by the first two letters. For example, Moscow cars went with plates that began with "MO" (MOS, MOR, ILO), Leningrad with "LE" (LEG, LEN), in Crimea, respectively, with "KR".

However, for several years, along with the new numbers, some of the machines received registration marks still old, that is, yellow ones. This went on until 1960. A motorcycle was in motion right up until 1965.

In 1967, an order was issued to bring the autonomers to a single model, only the order was, and there were no specific deadlines, so private car owners did not show special zeal to replace old signs with new ones, and the traffic police also did not insist on it.

However, to the 100th anniversary of Lenin, it was decided to end this confusion. To speed up the process, the SAI received an instruction that forced the inspection to work more actively with motorists, forcing them to exchange registration marks. Nevertheless, yellow numbers, though rare, still met on the roads of the country until the 1980s.

Numbers of 1981

On the eve of the Moscow Olympics, the format of the USSR autonomy has changed again. The color scheme was again reversed: black symbols were written on a white background. In addition, for the first time in history, registration marks were divided into two types: for private traders and for public transport.

Numbers for individuals were presented in this form - a small letter, two digits, a dash, two numbers and two large letters. The last two letters denoted belonging to the region of registration. The first letter was variable and could be any of the alphabetic list (except for exceptions).

State transport was supplied with numbers in the format of two digits, a dash, two numbers and three large letters.

On trucks, buses and motorcycles, the rear license plate was square. In this case, the figures occupy the lower part of the plate, and the three large letters are upper.

Autonomer of the USSR: dimensions

Precise information on the dimensions of the numbers that were installed on cars before 1936, no. But the parameters of the later registration signs are stated in GOST 3207-36. It spelled out everything: the sizes of numbers, letters, and even fringing. After all, it was with this standard that the rear and front plates became multidimensional.

So, the front number plate was a length of 58.5 cm and a width of 12.5 cm. Rear respectively - 36h34.5 cm.

The dimensions of the yellow autonomers of the USSR are presented in GOST 3207-46. These signs became slightly less than the pre-war: the front - 38.5 x 11 cm, the rear - 28.5 x 18.5 cm.

The parameters of the so-called black numbers (1959) were mentioned in GOST 3207-58.

After the release of this standard, the dimensions of the front marks of steel are 46.5x11.2 cm, the rear marks are 29x17 cm.

From the very beginning of 1980, namely from January 1, the USSR entered into force GOST 3207-77. This standard set the following parameters for the tablets: front - 52x11.2 cm, rear - 28.8x22.6 cm. By the way, it was in this GOST that the decoding of indices referring to the region was also cited.

So, for example, the series "UChI" on the autonomers of the USSR should mean that the car was registered in the Chechen-Ingush Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, and "in the GDR" - the Georgian SSR.

Interesting fact

Sochi, as is known, is located in the Krasnodar Territory and, accordingly, has regional subordination. However, despite this famous resort was the only regional city that had its own rooms. If all the cars of the region went with the "KK" series, then the car, which was registered in Sochi, had a series of "SO".
