The small Russian city of Arzamas is located in the Nizhny Novgorod region, 112 km south of Nizhny Novgorod. This is a municipal entity that is endowed with the status of a city district.

He reached a special heyday in the XIX century, so this time is often called the Golden Age of Arzamas. By the XIX century, 36 churches were built in the city, most of which were destroyed in the years of Soviet power. Now the city authorities are trying to restore what is still liable to restoration. At one time there were rumors that the city was going to be included in the Golden Ring of Russia, but this did not happen. Despite this, tourists come here daily, who want to see the main sights of Arzamas. Buses with guests usually arrive on Cathedral Square, where the Resurrection Cathedral stands - the symbol of Arzamas. From this place, we will begin our acquaintance with the city.

Arzamas landmarks: a short description

The Resurrection Cathedral in the city was built in honor of the great victory over the French in 1812. The construction of this magnificent structure required five and a half million bricks, 1,000 cubic meters of quarry went to the foundation, 165 tons of iron were used. The building was built according to the project of Mikhail Korinfsky - a pupil of the famous architect A. N. Voronikhin. The Resurrection Cathedral is, undoubtedly, the main decoration of the city. It is built on a high hill, harmoniously completing the composition of the central city square.

The sights of Arzamas, to which the Resurrection Cathedral certainly belongs, amaze tourists with its originality. If you look at the temple from afar, you can see that its domes hang over all the temple buildings of the city. The cathedral is built in the form of a Greek cross. The width and length are 64 meters, and the height is 47 meters. The fronts of the temple are decorated with large frescoes on biblical subjects. During the Soviet era, the cathedral planned to blow up, the protest of local residents did not allow it. The temple was simply closed. In mid-1948, the service was resumed. In 2009 Patriarch Kirill visited the cathedral.

Cathedral Square

The Cathedral Square of the city is a cultural and historical center. Here are the famous sights of Arzamas in the Nizhny Novgorod region. In addition to the cathedral, which we talked about, on the square is the church of the Icon of the Mother of God.

There is also a monument to V.I. Lenin in a cozy square. There are always a lot of people on the square - the townspeople come here to visit temples, go shopping or just relax in the park.

The Monastery of St. Nicholas

Many of the attractions of Arzamas belong to the religious buildings. This is the St. Nicholas Monastery (female), located in the center of the city. It was founded by Ivan the Terrible in 1580. Since then, the monastery operated until 1924. Then she shared the fate of all such institutions - the new authorities closed the monastery.

In 1994 the monastery was transferred to the Orthodox Church. Today 40 residents live here, two churches work: in honor of the icon of the Mother of God and in honor of the Holy Epiphany. At the monastery there is a rather large library. The nuns of the monastery guard the inmates of the labor colony of the city.

Epiphany Church

The sights of Arzamas, the photos of which you see in this article, are at times closely linked by a single history. An example of this is the Epiphany Church, which is located on the territory of the Nikolayev Monastery. As to the beginning of the construction of this temple, there are several versions, but the most reliable indicates that the church was built in 1811. The authors of the project were local architects.

Since the building was built, the building was rebuilt five times, and each reconstruction added to it new architectural features. Many sights of the city of Arzamas are admired by the boldness of architectural decisions. For example, the Epiphany Church has a two-storey layout. On the first floor are the cells in which the sick nuns live, and the hospital church, and on the second floor - the church of the Epiphany. The church fits perfectly into the general composition of the Cathedral Square.

Museum of the Russian Patriarchate

This is an amazing project of the Nizhny Novgorod Metropolitanate of the Orthodox Church and the Historical and Architectural Museum of Nizhny Novgorod. This is a unique exposition (unique in the world), which is completely devoted to the life of the Russian patriarchs. The museum began work in August 2013. The exhibits show the history of the patriarchate, including the Soviet era, when the life of the church was full of persecution. Most of the museum devoted to the life of the most holy Patriarch Sergius, who was a native of Arzamas.

Memorial to the Victims of June 4, 1988

On many tourists visiting the city of Arzamas of the Nizhny Novgorod region, the sights connected with the tragedy of 1988 make a very strong impression. On this terrible day at 9:32, three wagons with technical explosives exploded at the railway station of the city. Their total weight was 121 tons. The explosion was such a force that a funnel with a diameter of 53 meters and a depth of 26 meters was formed. The blast wave destroyed buildings within a radius of two kilometers. As a result of the tragedy, 91 people were killed and 1500 people were injured.

At this point (9.32) the clock hands died at the memorial memorial. Here, under the dome of the chapel is a bell, which rings in memory of the victims of the disaster. The memorial was consecrated by Bishop Elijah.

A. Gaidar House-Museum

And now we will present you some cultural attractions of Arzamas. Here is the only museum in our country, A. Gaidar. It was opened in 1967. The literary-memorial museum consists of three departments: the memorial, the literary and the museum of A.M. Gorky.

In the center of the city is the literary museum of the writer. It is located in the building where the Golikov family used to live (the surname of the writer). This two-story mansion was built at the end of the XIX century and belonged to the nobleman PP Shcherbakov. In the late 80-ies of the XIX century, he became the property of AI. Babaykina, in one of the outhouses lived the family of the future writer. It was Gaidar's childhood and youth. In the exposition of the museum you can see authentic things that once belonged to the Golikov family: dishes, furniture, personal belongings of parents.

In addition, the museum can get acquainted with manuscripts, photographs, documents. At the stands it is easy to trace the growth of an ordinary boy and turning him into a real writer, journalist. On the central alley of the Arzamas Park of Culture and Leisure in 1966, Arkady Gaidar erected a monument: the work of sculptor Yu. Struchkov and architect V. Zeldman.

Balakhonikhin cave

The natural sights of Arzamas in our article represents the Balakhonikhin cave. Its area is about 54 hectares. It is in the east of the old gypsum quarry near the steep wall. The cave has a narrow entrance, more like a gap, the length of which is 2.5 meters. The cave cave is a hemisphere cracked into separate blocks. He crowns the main hall and is reflected in perfectly clean water flowing along the bottom of the cave.

The temperature here does not rise above +3 degrees. In this cave, which is natural for cadastral formations, there were stalactites, stalagmites, stalactites, columns and curtains covered with bluish ice. From the central hall, the scorches diverge. All of them are connected by long underground galleries. The total length of the cave is 48 kilometers, the maximum height is 3 meters. In the long corridor, you can distinguish ledges, their height is more than 50 centimeters.

At the entrance to the cave in the summer, the ice veins melt, forming small stalactites on the vault. The Balakhonikhin cave has not been studied sufficiently, because it causes great interest of specialists.

Eiffel Tower

Hardly anyone from tourists who are studying the sights of Arzamas, expects to see here the Eiffel Tower. This superbly executed, very accurate, small copy of the famous design is located in the eastern part of the city, near a commercial technical school. It was built in 2012 by students under the leadership of Sergei Brodin, who conceived this project.

Amazing copy is built in scale 1:40. The height of the structure is eight meters. The famous creation of the Eiffel is transmitted in the smallest detail, which here, as in the original, is 18036 units. Agree, such sights of Arzamas can surprise even a sophisticated tourist.

Monument to the soldiers of the internationalists

I must say that the city's residents are very careful and support in the excellent condition of Arzamas's sights, regardless of their age, historical and cultural value. With special trepidation, they refer to the Monument to the soldiers-internationalists - their fellow countrymen who gave their lives in Afghanistan and Chechnya. This monument, located on Kalinin Street, always contains fresh flowers.
