Aglaonema: care and conditions of detention

A plant called Aglaonema is known in our country for a long time. His homeland is the islands of the Malay Archipelago and some tropical regions of East India. To date, about fifty representatives of this family are known. And although they refer to plants of slow growth, many houses have Aglaonema, care of which is rather simple and easy.

Virtually all representatives of this family belong to medicinal and ornamental plants. As a rule, Aglaonema is a small bush, the height of which can reach seventy centimeters. The leaves of this plant are oblong, have a very interesting coloring. They can be either purely green, or spotty, and even striped. Aglaonema, care for which is carried out correctly, can produce and peduncles, which are small flowers, collected in small cobs. In fact, such flowers do not represent decorative value, but they introduce some variety in the development of the plant. But after the flowers bloom, very interesting red fruits are tied.

Due to the fact that Aglaonema belongs to the family of aroids, this plant is poisonous. Especially toxic juice, which has a very unfavorable and even dangerous effect on the mouth and throat. If this juice gets into your mouth, it can cause a swelling in the throat. There are even known cases when people lost their voice after. Therefore it is necessary to emphasize that Aglaonema, care of which does not require much effort, still requires caution in handling. It is best to wear gloves when handling the plant. It is recommended to keep Aglaonema in rooms where there are no animals, and in places inaccessible to small children.

As already mentioned, there are quite a few varieties of this plant. One of them is called moderately modest or moderate. Her homeland is Indochina. In height it grows to half a meter. The trunk is very branchy, the length of the leaves can reach twenty centimeters. Aglaonema humble has a green leaf color, and its fruits are somewhat reminiscent of the fruits of dogwood. Another common species of this plant is the Aglaonema Mariya. It has a short trunk, up to thirty centimeters high. Aglaonema maria has very beautiful leaves, similar to green marble. It is necessary to remember that these plants are grown easily. But in order for them to please the eye with their appearance, it is necessary to constantly maintain the same temperature - 18-22 degrees Celsius.

In general, Aglaonema, care of which is really simple, still has certain requirements. So, for example, once in two or three years it must be transplanted. This is best done in April. And in order for it to actively grow, it is necessary that the soil has good drainage, therefore, it is not necessary to compact the top layer. The plant loves light, but, in principle, the shadow tolerates well. One of the main enemies of Aglaonema is the red spider. In order to fight it, you need to spray the leaves quite often with water. But from direct sunlight on the leaves may appear burns or they can generally curl up with a tube. Watering is required for the plant abundantly. It must be ensured that the soil in the pot is constantly moist. There is a fairly simple way to check if the plant needs watering. For this it is enough to knock on the pot. If a dull sound is heard at the tapping, it means that the ground in the pot is wet, and if the voiced one is dry, and therefore the plant needs to be watered. And do not forget once a week to loosen the soil in the pot. Reproduction of Aglaonema is carried out by dividing bushes or cuttings.
