Mr. Starodom left for business in Siberia and for several years does not give any news. The family of Prostakov, considering him dead, takes his niece, and his distant relative Sophia, to his house.

Knowing that there are a lot of pigs in the estate that Sophia should get from Starodom, Taras Skotinin, the brother of Prostakova, decides to marry her, a big fan of this living creature.

The first action begins with a scene in which Prostakova angrily scolds the courtyard Trichet for the too narrow caftan that he sewed to her son Mitrofanushka. The husband who entered on the question of Prostakov about how the caftan sits, notices that he is baggy, for which he receives a flurry of insults from his wife. Only appeared Skotinin notes that the suit is sewn "pretty". Sophia enters with a letter in her hands. The whole family is frightened that the letter is uncomfortable news: none of the Prostakov-Skotinins can read. The letter is read by the guest Pravdin who came in. From the text it becomes clear that Starodum not only did not die, but also became rich.

Prostakova, afraid to lose the wealth that Sophia inherits from Starodum, decides to upset the wedding with Skotinin and give the girl for her son Mitrofanushka.

Pravdin, appointed to "reveal ignoramuses," meets his friend Milo, who heads a military detachment passing through the village. Milo complains that his relatives took away from his city a girl whom he loved. Sophia appears: this is exactly what Milo told her about.

Sophia complains to her lover that she is wanted by force to marry the ignoramus Mitrofanushka and at the same time dispels jealous ideas about the "virtues" of her future bridegroom.

Passing by Skotinin hears a conversation and pounces with his fists at Mitrofanushka, who is covered by his body from uncle's cuffs, the nanny - the devoted Eremeevna.

Mitrofanushka complains to his mother about his uncle's will. She promises to deal with Skotinin and marry Mitrofanushka.

Nobody, except Pravdin, not seen, comes Starodum. He tells the guest about his successful career and about the decision to leave the royal court and live at home: he was angered by the hypocrisy and injustice of the royal associates.

Sophia enters. Starodum tries to inform her that tomorrow they are leaving, but they are interrupted by the noise of a fight: Prostakova is fighting with Skotinin. Those present separate the brother and sister, and Starodum declares that tomorrow he takes Sophia away to marry her for a worthy person. Noticing the discouragement that has arisen on the girl's face, the uncle promises to give her a choice and undertakes to accept any groom. Sophia and Milon sigh with relief. Prostakova begins to praise the virtues of Mitrofanushka.

Starodum finds out that Milo is the chosen one, in which he married Sophia. In passing, he is convinced of the complete ignorance of Mitrofanushka and his teacher Vralman.

The people of Prostakova are trying to kidnap Sophia, but she is rescued by Milo. Pravdin declares that he is authorized to take over the estate of the Prostakovs under the state guardianship. Teachers Mitrofan require a salary. Pravdin decides to give Mitrofan a soldier. The son rudely repels the mother who has rushed to him, but Skotinin slowly leaves.
