651 error when connecting to the Internet. Methods of solution and recommendations

Probably, very many users of computer systems using Miniport WAN PPPoE technology or a high-speed connection to connect to the Internet sometimes face an ambiguous problem when, instead of the expected access to the network, a message about a failure 651 (connection error) appears on the screen. What is it and how to fix this situation? Looking ahead, we immediately note that this is done quite simply.

Error 651 ( connection error ): what is it?

First, let us consider the nature of such a failure. Typically, the message text indicates that the modem or router returns an error when trying to use their settings to connect.

In other words, either a physical or a software level has a problem that blocks access. We will not go into details of the description of the technologies used to create or establish a connection, but we will dwell more on the causes of such failures and the simplest methods of their correction.

Causes of error

It goes without saying that the reasons themselves, which cause error 651 when connecting to the Internet (Windows systems are taken as an example), can be quite a lot. Of all this diversity can be identified only those that are found most often and are, so to speak, the main:

  • Damage to equipment and cables at the physical level;
  • PPPoE client malfunction;
  • Presence of a double connection to the network;
  • Blocking of connection by antivirus and built-in Windows tools;
  • Incorrect parameters in the settings of the router, and so on.

Based on what is presented in the list, and we will look for a solution to fix the 651 error (connection error) for each particular case.

If physical damage is present

First of all, if suddenly a computer or laptop gives out warnings of this kind, you should not immediately look for a reason, say, in viruses or in the "snap" of network connection settings. Everything can be trivial simply: maybe the network cable is damaged, maybe there was a power surge, maybe there are loose connectors somewhere, but is it not enough?

Naturally, it is desirable to check all components or "ring" the cable. However, a simpler version often helps. To start, you should click on the prompt in the warning window to prompt you to restart the connection. Who knows, maybe it was a fleeting failure. If this does not work, you can try to completely restart the computer terminal and the router (router). In this case, between disconnecting and re-enabling the router, you must wait for at least 10 seconds to reset the settings, and then wait for the full load. If this is not done, the system will again display a message like "Error 651 when connected to the Internet". On the other hand, this approach may not help, if initially the problem of communication failure is much deeper. Let's see, what else can this be?

Error 651 when connecting to the Internet: client failure RASPPPoE

When using a high-speed connection to create a connection, most often such failures are observed in the work of specialized modules, including the client responsible for PPPoE.

Let's dwell on this client in more detail. As a rule, as the main method of fixing the situation, it is planned to create a new connection.

To do this, you must use the Win + R shortcut that calls the "Run" menu, where the rasphone.exe command is written in the line. Then choose one of three options (for PPPoE using a high-speed connection via modem or DSL), then you just need to follow the instructions of the "Wizard".

Accordingly, the newly created connection must be checked for operability. If the new connection also has a connection error 651 (Windows 7, for example), then you will have to check some parameters and settings. First of all, make sure that the router and the Wi-Fi module on the computer or laptop are turned on. Perhaps in the settings of the router are set incorrect parameters for VPN-networks, etc. But about everything in order.

The presence of an extraneous network

One of the reasons for such failures may be the presence of a second connection, for example, when two network adapters with two concurrent communications are installed on the user's computer. In this case, failure 651 (an error when connecting the Internet) Windows 7 interprets exactly as an internal conflict, when one connection takes precedence over another (in particular, for cases when services are provided by two different providers).

Remember, if you just unplug the cable from one network card, there will not be any sense. To do this, go to the network and sharing control section and disable one of the adapters there (the menu for changing adapter settings). However, you should not delete it in the "Device Manager", it can negatively affect the system as a whole.

Problems with antivirus and firewall

Very often, there may be a situation where the connection is blocked for some reason at the level of the anti-virus software or the Windows firewall. In this situation, you can try to disable the antivirus for a while (many packages provide such a function). However, as practice shows, the firewall differs more for the worse.

Here it should be turned off completely. For this, the standard "Control Panel" is used, where the corresponding section is selected. The system will give out a couple of warnings, but you should not pay attention to this. By the way, many may wonder, they say, why you need to completely disable the firewall? Yes, only because you can not make an Internet connection in the list of exceptions in any way. This is not "executable" or any other executable file of the program.

Invalid router and protocol settings

Now consider the most common problem when the router settings "flies", and the system reports that there was a connection error 651. How can I fix this situation? First you need to check the basic settings of the same router.

You can login to them through any of the Internet browsers by typing 192.168.0.1 or 162.168.1.1 in the address bar (it all depends on the router model). In general, this address can be found on the label from the bottom. There you can find out the login and password, if any.

First of all, you should pay attention to the address of the VPN server (for PPTP and L2PT connections). In addition, for ONT-terminals on the router you need to use the mode of "transparent bridge" (Bridge), otherwise the system will again report a failure 651 (connection error) when trying to connect.

Next, compare the TCP / IP settings with those that the provider provided when connected. In extreme cases, you can try to set an automatic definition, as well as disable the use of a proxy for local addresses.

Additional actions with the registry for server OS

Failure 651 (an error when connecting to the Internet), of course, can occur on server versions of Windows. In particular, this concerns the modification of Windows 2003 Server. Here, the specificity of fixing the problem is somewhat different, although the above methods sometimes help.

But in this case, it is better to use the Registry Editor called by the regedit command from the "Run" menu bar (Win + R), where you need to go through the branch of the HKLM tree through the SYSTEM, CurrentControlSet, and then to the Parameters folder in the Tcpip directory.

Here, first create a DWORD parameter named EnableRSS and assign it a value of 0, and then in the same section - the DWORD parameter named DisableTskOffload with a value of 1. If this parameter is already in the registry, you just need to change the value to one. After that, without fail, for the changes to take effect, the computer terminal needs to be rebooted.

The result

In general, here we consider only the most typical cases of occurrence of problems of the 651 type. We did not consider situations when problems arise from the provider (the user will not be able to do anything here). Also, situations where you might need to reinstall or update network drivers may not be considered. In the rest, as can be seen from the above, the problem is solved quite simply.
