Zagorsk Optical and Mechanical Plant: history, description, reviews

JSC "Zagorsk Optical and Mechanical Plant" is one of the leaders in the production of observational, measuring, control, photometric, medical optical electronic and mechanical devices. The enterprise is an important structural subdivision of the "Schwabe" holding.

History of creation

By the mid-1930s, as a result of large-scale industrialization, many enterprises, research centers, and laboratories were in need of optical instrumentation. Particularly lacked flaw detectors and hardness meters of materials.

The government decided to build an advanced enterprise near Moscow capable of producing optical equipment. Thus, in 1935 the Zagorsk Optical-Mechanical Plant was founded. The laying of the first stone in the foundation of the enterprise took place on the day of the 18th anniversary of the October Revolution in a solemn atmosphere. Construction was to become one of the priority in the second five-year plan. Already by April 1936, the production of microscopes for measuring the hardness of metals used in Brinell presses was set up.

War time

The production did not have time to gain momentum, as in autumn 1941 the Zagorsk Optical-Mechanical Plant had to be evacuated away from the front line to Tomsk. When the operational situation near Moscow was normalized, the machines and equipment were returned to their native shops.

According to statistics, during the war period ZOMZ produced 781,000 different products. Of them:

• 300,000 army binoculars;
• 130,000 sights for artillery installations;
• 110,000 reconnaissance periscopes;
• 78,000 aircraft targets.

Post-war development

A peaceful life set new challenges for the plant. In each of the subsequent five-year plans more than 50 new products were developed and mastered. The leading products were (and still are):

• Observing devices;
• Products of special, general industrial use;
• Medical equipment;
• Film projectors;
• Famous photographic lenses of the series "Jupiter", "Mir", "Tair", "Orion".

Zagorsk Optical and Mechanical Plant, whose impressive photo, in 1981 became the base for the creation of a profile production association in partnership with the Salavat Optical and Mechanical Plant.

Over 82 years of history ZOMZ has made a huge contribution to strengthening the country's defense and economic strength. More than 1,100 factory workers were awarded government awards, including the title Hero of Socialist Labor awarded to AI Pakhomov. The Order of Lenin received 13 people, the Order of the October Revolution - 10 people, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor - 101 people. The plant in 1985 was awarded the Order of the October Revolution.

On the edge of progress

Today, the plant is intensively introducing modern information technologies, united by the ideology of a computer-integrated plant system (CISP). The use of CI CAD subsystem allows to significantly shorten the terms of development of tools and technologies, to improve their quality. Director of Zagorsk Optical and Mechanical Plant Andrey Rastorguev makes great efforts to automate and computerize production lines, upgrade equipment, introduce innovative solutions.

About 70% of the components are manufactured at factory facilities. Complex parts are made on CNC machines in the CIS ATK (ACYTP) subsystem. The output produces products that are popular in Russia and in the world. The list of export goods includes binoculars, monoculars, sports and hunting sights, PNV, analytical instruments.

Observing devices

JSC ZOMZ is one of the leading developers and manufacturers of a wide range of observing devices. Among them: monoculars, night binoculars, day and combined, multifunctional sights. These optical devices are made of light alloys. They are distinguished by an optimal combination of basic parameters and prices. The sector of electronic optics participates in the creation of various products, promotes the wide dissemination of optical methods of analysis and research, accurate measurements at a qualitatively new level in virtually all areas of industry and science.

Medical equipment

After the war, the Zagorsk Optical and Mechanical Plant began to develop and produce medical equipment. In a short time the production was set up:

• Eye perimeters;
• Slit lamps;
• Ophthalmoscopes large and simple;
• Exophthalmometers;
• Electro-ophthalmoscopes.

In cooperation with physicians of the Institute of Eye Diseases, sophisticated devices were designed: anomaloscopes of the ACP and AN-59 series (color vision detectors), an ophthalmometer, an adaptometer. Since 1959, projection dioptmeters and laser ophthalmic coagulators have been manufactured.

Photometric devices

In 1946-1950 technical documentation for visual photometric instruments was developed: a universal photometer of the Pulfrich FM-58 type, an NFM nephelometer, and a Dubossko KOL-1 colorimeter (KOL-1M). They serve to determine the optical properties (transmission, reflection, absorption) of materials and the concentration of matter in solutions.

The production of these devices required the mastery of many new technological processes, the production of high-precision scales and mechanisms, cuvettes for solutions and others. The manufacture of irreplaceable devices required the presence of photocells, which were not commercially produced in the USSR. The plant was able to organize its own production of selenium photocells and to assemble the photoelectric colorimeters of the FEC family (FEK-M, FEK-N-57) and their improved versions (FEK-56, FEK-56M, KFK, KFK-2, KFK-2MP). These photometric instruments were manufactured over many years, while old models were replaced with new ones, which allowed them to effectively meet the needs of science and production.
