Wooden casket with own hands: a master class and drawings

Let's try to make an object like a casket of wood with your own hands. How useful is this accessory? Casket carved from wood is great for storing small souvenirs and small collectibles such as stamps or coins. They will decorate the interior and give it a note of identity.

Master Class. Caskets of wood with their own hands

We will fabricate the box from a sheet of plywood of 8 mm thickness as the most accessible material. Beforehand, make sure that the plywood we are going to use with a flat surface does not contain detritus, marks from knots and other minor defects. The texture pattern should be uniform, then the sheet can easily be cut without fear that in the process of work the pieces of veneer will be broken off.

Well, let's start. First of all, on the prepared surface should be applied a drawing of our future product - the scheme of the casket of wood. To do this, take a pencil and simple drawing tools such as rulers and compasses. If there is a ready-made drawing that needs to be scaled, take care of the accuracy of drawing each corner and line. A proper and accurate drawing of a casket made of wood is a necessary condition for success.

Elements of a rectangular shape make it possible to use the plywood sheet most economically. With a successful layout of unnecessary scraps almost will not.

We cut it right

Then, using the jig saw, we start the procedure of accurate cutting of all the main parts - the lid, the bottom and the walls. The smoother our thread, the more precise the contour of the part we get, resulting in a shorter time for the file.

Especially neatly, it is necessary to cut along the boundary line of neighboring parts. If she goes obliquely, then both parts will be spoiled, or both will have to be trimmed.

After this, the most important stage begins, connected with the most delicate work. We are talking about sawing joints in the form of joiner spikes. For our small box suitable small square spikes of simple shape. Their height should correspond to the thickness of the plywood sheet, that is, in our case equal to 8 millimeters.

Which tool to choose

As a rule, they are sawed with a sawmill. But we can take a jigsaw or a hacksaw for metal. Its blade is great for working with wood, as it almost does not bend.

If you choose a jig saw, you should cut them almost along the intended line. The distance in the direction of the cut off section should not exceed one or two millimeters in size. A small surplus of wood is subsequently easier to remove by a file.

So we made straight cuts. To connect them, bring the jigsaw to the edge and gently unfold it 90 degrees. At the same time, the movement up and down does not stop.

In the same way, we cut and delete all unnecessary fragments. From the quality of this stage of work depends on how much our future product will be durable and reliable. If at this stage we accidentally spoil the workpiece, all work will have to start anew.

Now you cover

Now proceed to cut the lid on our casket. Undoubtedly, it is much easier to do this work than to cut the thorns. But let's not relax. Do not forget to observe the flatness of the cut and maintain a right angle between the planes of our saw and the surface of the plywood sheet. This is done so that there are no further gaps between the cut out parts of the lid and the walls.

This concludes the most difficult phase of the work. The next task in the order - a box of wood with his own hands should be assembled into a single unit of individual elements. If the thorns hardly fit into the nest or do not enter at all - do not get discouraged. Worse, when they go down there.

Subtlety of technology

The surplus material is easily sewn by the file. It is best to choose one that has a square cross-section. Such grinding should be carried out in small portions with constant fitting of the parts relative to each other.

To make the fit as accurate as possible, it should be done on a table or other level surface. To increase the reliability of the wall should be planted on the glue. Details must be pressed to each other, at least for a short period of time.

This is most conveniently done with a clamp or clamp. Do not forget to insert a small wooden strip between the product and the steel surface of the tool.

Casket of wood with your own hands: fix the lid

Having fastened the walls of the box, we will deal with the fitting and gluing of the bottom, as well as the covers. The lid of our casket will be attached to the body on small metal hinges, which are easy to buy at any hardware store. You can buy small loops in the amount of 2 or 3 pieces or one long loop for furniture.

When working with loops, care must be taken to ensure that they do not protrude above the surface of the enclosure. Therefore, in the place of fixing each of them, wood should be selected slightly. Take for this jig saw or a small saw with a straight chisel.

To screw the hinges, you should choose small screws, the size of which will correspond to the diameter of the hole in the hinges. To ensure that they were accurately fastened in the intended location, and the plywood was not split, the hole should be drilled a bit smaller than the diameter of the screw. The difference should be no more than one or two millimeters.

Do not forget about the castle

On the outside, it is desirable to provide the box with some locking mechanism in the form of, for example, a lock, a hook or a latch. This will help to save the contents and will not allow the box to open at the most unexpected moment.

All such parts are attached similarly to the hinges with the help of small screws in the holes drilled in advance for them. If the material of the box is a tree, and not plywood, even a small furniture lock is allowed.

Basically the product is ready. We hope that our project: "Caskets made of wood" came out successful, and the product turned out to be neat and externally attractive. If it is not so - do not be upset. The novice, who first undertakes the creation of such a masterpiece, rarely succeeds at once.

On possible shortcomings

A box of wood with its own hands is not required from the first time to be perfect. Most often, the final version shows us unexpected omissions. Most noticeable are annoying gaps between the elements that are not sufficiently tightly fitted. Having discovered something similar, do not give in to the first impulse - to get rid of an unsuccessful craft. It is more reasonable to carefully consider the product, analyze where the mistake was made, and take into account this useful experience.

As for the further fate of our product, then much is fixable. For example, the slots may well be subjected to sealing and masking. After all, there are many tricks.

The simplest option is to take the ready putty for the tree and cover it with unwanted cracks. You can prepare yourself a so-called "liquid tree", the basis of which will be used in the work of glue. This option is also suitable if we want to veneer our casket.

In addition, the product can be covered with linseed oil or painted. In the latter case, having patched the parts, we primer them before painting.

We decorate our crafts

But to make a rectangular box and call it a box is not all. The product should be decorated, and it is best to do this with the help of thread.

The carved casket is a real work of art. There are different types of caskets made of wood. In former times, many of them were carefully kept in every house. After all, carving on wood with the creation of a variety of geometric patterns people have been fascinated for a long time.

In the Russian villages, most of the wooden products, from furniture to tableware, were decorated with elaborate carvings. At the heart of this decor was always the usual geometric pattern, and the aesthetic effect exceeded all expectations. Caskets carved from wood were created by the real masters of their craft, they were strong and durable.

Learning to work with wood

If you do not yet know the methods of geometric carving - it's time to learn. It's not that hard at all. And in order not to spoil our ready, so carefully executed casket, we will practice first on a separate piece of wood - for example, on a cutting board.

The tools for this procedure will be the simplest. You and I will get by with only two knives: a so-called knife-pen and a knife-jamb of triangular shape, as well as a ruler, a pencil and a compass.

A knife-pen is taken when it is required to cut out an elongated shape element, for example, a petal or a sufficiently long trough. It is also used for smaller slits.

The second tool is used to cut through various geometric shapes, mostly triangular shapes, as well as straight long lines. Each knife must be sharp and have a comfortable handle.

Geometrical thread technology

Immediately prior to the beginning of the work, a sketch of the future pattern should be put on the board. You can draw it in pencil, using a ruler and compasses. And you can use the ready-made stencil, transferring the picture to the board with a copier.

Let's say our ornament contains plant motifs. It is with them that you should get started. Technology is simple: the thumb is pressed to the board as tightly as possible, and the index finger touches it lightly in the area of the upper joint. This way holding the knife, you have the ability to control and change the angle of its inclination and the depth of immersion in the wood. With the thumb, the blade moves smoothly and neatly.

Cutting one side of the element, the board should be turned over and perform a similar operation from the opposite side. Pay attention: if the shavings from the knife curl "rope" - then the tools are sufficiently sharpened.

How to cut geometric shapes

Elements in the form of triangles and other similar figures are cut using a knife-jamb. His heel is cut into the wood at an inclination of about 45 degrees, while we do not bring the edge of the picture. We repeat the operation from different sides of the geometric element.

We cut all the slots along the sides. As a result, the cut piece of wood falls out of the board. Remains of wood, which could not be cut off with a knife, smoothly and accurately cleaned.

By the same principle, we cut out all the other elements of the picture. At the end of the process we take the nest and carefully polish everything. You can carry out additional treatment with natural impregnation.

So we learned the simplest methods of carving wood. In the future, with the increase in the number of crafts and, accordingly, experience, our skill will increase. We will be able to make wooden boxes, not only lacquered or painted in various colors, but also decorated with an extraordinary fantasy ornament that will look just luxurious.
