Why is the assistant surveyor so in demand?

"A surveyor's assistant is required" - such announcements can be found in the media of large cities almost daily. What is this profession and why is it so in demand? Everyone can work as a surveyor or his assistant?

What does the surveyor's assistant do?

Jobs (Moscow and other big cities "suffer" this especially) do not usually explain what exactly is the duty of the assistant surveyor. Because this specialty requires compulsory education, and regardless of the specifics of the organization, workers perform approximately the same activity. A surveyor, as the dictionary explains, is a person who determines the coordinates of points on the surface of the earth. Such a vague definition is probably outdated. The surveyor and the assistant to the surveyor today are engaged most often in topographical support of construction works. They produce all necessary measurements, make tables and graphs, make survey surveys and other procedures that determine the correct location of buildings on the ground, compliance with their parameters and the fulfillment of building requirements, legalized by the widest range of normative publications (GOSTs, instructions, SNiPs).

Assistant surveyor should be able to:

  • To create a basis for subsequent construction.
  • Perform work in the process of construction.
  • Conduct geodetic monitoring of the accuracy of the sizes of objects under construction, the correctness of their attachment to the terrain.
  • To make a facade shooting of buildings.
  • Perform some other types of geodetic work.

Requirements for the profession

Naturally, the Assistant Surveyor can not fulfill these duties if he does not have at least a secondary technical education and if he does not know all the normative documents. It must be remembered that the profession is in demand not only in construction. Therefore, the specialty "assistant surveyor" can be mastered not only in the construction college (technical school). They produce such workers and cartographic, meteorological, and polytechnical establishments. The surveyor's assistant can compile maps for the navigator, map newly discovered deposits, monitor and draw maps of geographically hazardous objects, for example landslides. In any case, he should know:

  • All special devices and the rules for their operation.
  • Geodetic work required for a particular project.
  • Rules for the production of all necessary work.

In addition to highly specialized knowledge, the surveyor's assistant must know the main provisions of labor legislation, safety engineering at work and during work. He must follow fire regulations, do the right calculations. Depending on the type of production that this specialist is engaged in, it may require knowledge related to the construction of foundation pits or the construction of monolithic structures, the rules of working in mountain conditions, etc.

And what else?

The assistant of the surveyor should be able to communicate with people, be able to explain to them where the mistake is made, be able to insist on correcting it. And he just has to have very strong health: he has to work all hours in the open air. Working at a construction site, in a field or in a mountainous area requires physical endurance and the same preparation.
