Why is Oleg called? Prince Oleg the Prophet: biography

History is an interesting science that stores information about the life of mankind, the legendary events and personalities that influenced the course of historical events on Earth. Especially this knowledge is important now, when events of a negative order take place in countries such as the former Yugoslavia or today's Ukraine. But in fact, by the Prophetic Oleg, Kiev was appointed "the mother of Russian cities"! Today, not everyone knows why Oleg Veshchim was nicknamed. Maybe he was a fortuneteller?

"Tale of Bygone Years"

The personality of Oleg appeared in the annals of historians, when events related to the death of the Novgorodian prince Rurik were described . Dying, Rurik gave him under the care of his young son Igor. In 879, both Novgorod and Igor's son became a concern of Oleg, whom historians consider a relative of Rurik's wife. Modern researchers insist that Oleg was just a talented warrior who became a voivode and an approximate man of the Novgorod prince. Whoever Oleg was - he became the regent under Igor, the prince of Novgorod and Kiev, a person who was in power during the creation of a single Russia. The chronicler Nestor in his "Tale ..." describes the activities of the prince and indicates why Oleg the Prophet.

Trekking to Kiev

Becoming regent and prince of Novgorod, Oleg in three years conceived to expand the territory of the principality and went on a campaign to Smolensk. Having collected a huge army, in 882, it goes to the south and captures this city. Behind Smolensk followed Lyubech. In these cities he placed his deputies with a sufficient number of soldiers and moved further along the Dnieper. On his way was Kiev. At this time the reign of the Kiev principality was carried out by Askold and Dir. Prince Oleg possessed the dignity of an experienced military strategist and clever clever man. Once at the Kiev mountains, he hid his squad and only appeared with Igor in his arms. Convincing Askold and Dir that this is a courtesy visit on the way to the Greeks, he lured them out of the city. Warriors cracked down on the rulers, and Kiev was captured by Prince Oleg.

Why is it a prophetic? This name began to be called only after the Byzantine campaign, in 907. In the meantime, he became the prince of Kiev and declared this city "the mother of Russian cities." Since then, Oleg has pursued a policy of uniting the Slavs, expanding the boundaries of lands, exempting from tribute, which was paid to the tribes of nomads.

Trekking to Byzantium

If you look at an explanatory dictionary, you can see that the name of the prophet means not only a "predictor", but also a "reasonable person." This was Prince Oleg. It was in the campaign against Byzantium in 907 that Oleg the Prophet proved his wit. Having conceived a campaign, he assembled a huge army, not only on horses, but also on ships. They were all kinds of people: Varangians, Chudis, Krivichi, Slovenes, and many others, whom the Greeks called the "Great Scythia". Prince Igor remained to rule Kiev, and Oleg went on a campaign. It is after the campaign that it becomes clear why Oleg "Veschim" was nicknamed. The desire to expand the borders of the Russians, establish trade relations with other countries pushed Oleg into a campaign against Byzantium, where he went in 907.

Fighting

Coming to Constantinople (Constantinople) with an army and ships, which were two thousand, Oleg landed on the shore. This had to be done, because the city from the sea side was protected by the chains that locked the Golden Horn Bay, and the ships could not overcome them. Going ashore, Prince Oleg began to fight around Constantinople: he killed many people, set fire to houses and churches, did a lot of evil. But the city did not give up. And then Oleg came up with a trick: he ordered his ships to be put on wheels. When the tail wind blew, sails were opened and the ships went towards Tsargrad. The Greeks understood that it was time to send ambassadors and agree on a tribute. They promised Oleg to give everything he wished. They brought him different dishes and wine, which the prince did not accept, fearing that all this was poisoned - and was not mistaken. This fact also indicates why Oleg "Prophetic" was nicknamed: foresight saved his life.

Sword on the gates of Constantinople

And Oleg the Prophet Oleg laid a tribute. He ordered to pay 12 hryvnias for each soldier in the ships: there were forty of them. And the ships - two thousand. He ordered to give tribute to cities: for Kiev, Chernigov, Lyubech, Rostov, Polotsk, Pereyaslavl and for other places over which Oleg ruled. The Greeks agreed to all conditions for the sake of preserving peace on their land. To establish peace, they swore an oath: the Greek kings kissed the cross and promised to pay tribute. And Prince Oleg and his men swore by their weapons and gods: Rusichs were pagans. They promised that they would not fight, and made peace. In a sign of victory over the Greeks, Oleg hung his shield on the gates of the city and only after that went back. Oleg returned to Kiev with huge wealth, and he was nicknamed after him - "We are". For the first time, a peace treaty was signed between the two countries - Rus and Byzantium, relations were established: they allowed to conduct duty-free trade. But once he made a fatal mistake and Oleg Veshchiy: the events of his death speak about this.

Prophecy of the Magi

Oleg prophetic addressed the magi with the question of his death: why should he die? They predicted death from his beloved horse. And then Oleg the Prophet was ordered to put the horse, to feed, but never to lead to it. Vowed never to sit on him. This lasted for several years. Oleg went on campaigns, reigned in Kiev, concluding peace with many countries. Since then four years have passed, the fifth, 912 years have come. The prince returned from the campaign from Tsargrad and remembered his favorite horse. Calling the groom, he made an interrogation about his state of health. To which he received the answer: the horse died. And that - three years. Oleg concluded that the Magi are deceiving in their predictions: the horse is already dead, and the prince is alive! Why did Oleg Veshchey not believe them and decided to see the remains of his horse? This is not known to anyone. Oleg wanted to see his bones and went to the place where they are. Seeing the skull of the horse, he stepped on him with the words: "Is this the reason for me to take death from the skull?"

From the skull appeared a snake and stung Prophetic Oleg in the leg. After that he fell ill and soon died. The prediction about how Prince Oleg Oleg will die, whose biography is described in the chronicles of Nestor, is here, and this legend is brought.

Years of Principality

The Grand Duke of Kiev and Novgorod Prophetic Oleg gained fame in 879 and died in 912. The years of his reign did not go unnoticed: during this period, the unification of Slavic tribes took place, and a single center, Kiev, was organized. The borders of Rus considerably expanded, and good-neighborly relations with Byzantium were established. Why Oleg "prophetic" called? For his intelligence, foresight, for the ability to choose the right strategy and competently conduct foreign policy.
