What kinds of CDs are there? RW discs and other

Despite the abundance of various media, such as external hard drives and flash drives, CDs are still quite popular. Their types and types are so diverse that the beginner does not immediately orient. In order to make the correct purchase of CD and DVD discs, you must at least understand their abbreviations that manufacturers use. For example, what are RW disks?

This technology allows you to erase data from a blank disc and write it again and again. Its disadvantage is that such CD-RW disks can not be read by all devices. CD-RW drives play CD-R, CD-RW and music CDs.

A little walk through all the other types of disks. For starters - what is a CD-R? This is abbreviated from CD-Recordable. We have in front of us blanks, which are designed for one-time recording. This is the most that neither is the standard CD, which is perfectly readable by various CD-devices, but you can use them as recording only once. This is a big drawback. It is possible only if there is a place to finish the information. And then, only if it is not closed for this operation.

CD-RW discs are of two types: ultra-speed and high-speed. The first ones are not written on old-style CD-RW drives.

Now let's take a little look at the DVDs. They can have six types:

  • DVD + RW;
  • DVD-RAM;
  • DVD-R for Authoring;
  • DVD-R for General;
  • DVD + R;
  • DVD-RW.

Of these, the most common, which can be (like its CD-R counterpart) recorded just once, is DVD-R. Such a blank has two subspecies, mentioned above: general and authoring. The first are for use at home, the latter for professional use.

DVD-RW discs have impressive characteristics. They can be erased and overwritten up to 1000 times. But they also have one important drawback - for the subsequent rewriting it is necessary to erase absolutely all information, partial removal is impossible. They are read by almost all DVD-drives and devices.

DVD-RAM with most players and drives is incompatible, it uses phase-change technology with magneto-optical elements. These discs can be re-recorded more than 100,000 times, and they serve at least 30 years. Issued in cartridges and without, there are unilateral and bilateral.

DVD + RW are disks, the format of which is based on the already known technology CD-RW. You can overwrite it thousands of times.

DVD + R - the same DVD + RW, only once recorded. Its compatibility is similar to the DVD-R.

It is clear that all this pile of formats is incompatible with the players / drives, or with each other. At the moment there are very few "supermult" drives that can record all kinds of disks.

Optical drives can play all standard CD and DVD discs, which are very similar in appearance, but in fact are very different. Take at least the amount of information they store. If the first can hold up to 700 MB of information, then the second - up to 17 GB, that is, more than 24 times.

The most popular are RW disks, since consumers still prefer to be able to overwrite data.

Sometimes DL is added to the DVD, which means that you can write twice as much information on the disc and count as many from it. There is no need to turn the disc around.

Here we are a little and got acquainted with various primary information about laser. We concluded that the CD-RW will be delayed for a long time on our computer desks. More thoroughly and in detail you can familiarize yourself with this topic by reading specialized literature.
