With the advent of computers in private offices and state organizations, a need arose for a very specific (at that time) employee - the system administrator, who will serve these same electronic machines and the Internet at the same time. And as befits any respected profession, there is a professional holiday for these computer specialists - Day of the system administrator.

Soldiers of the invisible front

Without them computers do not work, printers do not print, the computer does not connect to the network, emails do not send, servers do not work, websites fall and software flies. They are system administrators. Usually they are rarely seen outside the cabinet, and if you see, you can be sure that this specialist of his business is running to help the next employee in the organization. Well, or goes to dial the kettle, because the working day of the system administrator can be full of both work and idleness. Very often they are compared to doctors. They are never remembered until everything works like a clock. But it's worth some gear in these same hours to fail, whether it's a computer or a program, a printer, connections to the Internet or something else, they immediately remember about it and rush to call and call for help.

It is clear that in Russia the profession of "system administrator" is also popular and such specialists are in demand. But there is a small but. Unlike their foreign colleagues, our system administrators can do everything: install Windows, fix a computer, create a site, set up a server, write a report, download an essay or a coursework for the boss, periodically photograph the team, unload something (especially if the remaining team is female). These are unique people who are accustomed to communicate more with computers than with real people, work exclusively on the energy of coffee (rare models - from tea), hate stupid questions and stupid users. And with such stressful work, they just need a holiday like the Day of the System Administrator.

It is interesting that many such specialists have a special tool - a shamanic tambourine of a sysadmin, with the help of which half of all breakdowns are being repaired (this, of course, is a joke, but many really do).

Day of the system administrator

One day, Ted Kekatos, an American sysadmin, saw in the magazine an advertising article by Hewlett-Packard, which described how happy users thanked the system administrator with fruit and flowers for installing multiple printers. Inspired by this note, and also by the fact that Ted himself recently installed several of the same printers, he decided to organize a special Day of the system administrator. The choice fell on the last Friday of July, to be exact July 28, 2000. That day it was just a small picnic in the nature with colleagues from the software company. As expected, the rest of the world learned about this event. And since then all sysadmins of the world accept congratulations on the Day of the system administrator on the last Friday of July. Of course, if nothing breaks down on this day, they will not be remembered again.

Apparently, there is no fixed date for this holiday, as the date of the last Friday of July changes every year. So, Day of the system administrator-2015 passed on July, 31st. However, it has already passed, so it's better to think about the future sysadmin event, which will be celebrated on July 29, 2016. Therefore, if there is a great desire to congratulate a computer doctor, it is worth remembering, and it is better to record this date.

Festival

However, perhaps the sysadmin will not be able to congratulate on this day. The fact is that on the last Friday and the weekend after July the All-Russian meeting of sysadmins is held - a festival near Kaluga, dedicated to the Day of the computer engineer, in the open air. Participants from more than 150 localities in Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and Kazakhstan are involved in various fascinating contests, such as throwing the keyboard and mouse for range and accuracy, a lottery for the number of the participant, competition for laying the network in the area. Also organized discotheques, rock concerts, fireworks and a large "sysadminskiy" bonfire - the participants set fire to stuffed lamers from last year's rally. Also a similar meeting is held in Novosibirsk.

Official Day of the programmer

In addition to the above-described holiday (Day of the System Administrator), there is also the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day. Unlike the first, this holiday was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 2006 and is celebrated on May 17. So we can assume that the system administrators have two professional holidays.

What to give?

As you know, for holidays it is necessary to give gifts. But what to present to the sysadmin on System Administrator Day 2015 and in the following years? The first thing that comes to mind is a flash drive. But why should he give something that he had in bulk. A mug? Not worth it, unless, of course, it's super-twisted. Trinkets, towels and all sorts of trivial things also do not fit. You need something like that. For example, the same tambourine, an external hard drive will be a good presentation, a subscription somewhere. Weekend on this day, too, will be good or some creative, which will be appropriate (greeting cake, for example). In the same way, you can congratulate the birthday of the system administrator.

In general, in no case should not ignore this holiday, as system administrators are also people, they will be pleased to receive a gift on their professional holiday and see that they are loved and appreciated in the office. In addition, very much depends on them, namely the technical organization of the normal operation of the office, which without them simply will not be.
