What does the term "antisocial" mean? Is it a character trait or a mental illness?

To differ from others - is it good or bad? Someone can say that this defines a person as an independent person. And someone will say that you can not be different. In fact, both are right: a man is not always different for the better, and such a person is awarded with the epithet "antisocial". This means a person who opposes the norms and rules of society. This will be discussed in the publication.

Definition

The meaning of the word "antisocial" has several characteristics. If we translate literally from the Greek language, we get the following definition: a person who is indifferent to society, does not take active actions in the life of society, that is, an antisocial individual. Also, the word "antisocial" implies behavior that contradicts the norms and rules accepted in society.

In fact, this concept has two opposite definitions. On the one hand, antisocial is a person acting contrary to established rules, but on the other hand is an individual who is not interested in interacting with the society. If he has a motivation, then it is mainly aimed at single actions.

How is this term used?

Asocial is a term that appeared in everyday life in the early twentieth century. Initially, it was used in its policy statements, meaning by this word all the dysfunctional people, that is, the underclass. During the Second World War, in the camps of the Third Reich, the asocial elements wore the same identification marks as the mentally retarded people.

On the positive side, asociality is considered in religious dogmas. Some monastic traditions encourage asociality, believing that a person who is far from society, is closer to God.

Asocial ones can be called introverts, people who do not take active positions in society. But the extreme form of asociality is considered schizophrenia, for which the characteristic inability to empathize and establish contact with other people is characteristic.

Other person

Proceeding from all of the above, a natural question arises: what is it, this antisocial personality?

So, the antisocial personality. The definition of this term will be: asocial personality in psychology means a person with a perverted (underdeveloped or absent) sense of responsibility, which operates with low moral values and does not show interest in self similar.

Such people are easy to learn by their behavior. They are painfully and violently able to react to feelings of their own dissatisfaction and always seek to get rid of objects or situations that bring discomfort. They are impulsive, inclined to "wear masks", skillfully lie. But often enough perceived by the surrounding intelligent and charming people. Asocial people can find contact with others on the background of common interests, but they do not know how to show empathy and care.

Behavior

Asocial is another. It's not like this: from the habit of tying shoelaces to the perception of reality, what is there to talk about behavior? As already mentioned, this behavior is different from the norms and rules accepted in society. Depending on what the researcher considers the norm, antisocial behavior will be considered the opposite action. For example, if you examine the adaptation process, then the maladaptive behavior can be considered as an antisocial behavior.

Thus, the concept of "antisocial behavior" definition will have the following:

  • This is one of the varieties of deviant behavior, which causes damage to the society. This behavior is not aimed at social relationships, but has a wide range of activities: from infantility to mental disorders.

Not always antisocial behavior can be considered a negative quality, there is evidence that people of an antisocial type brought a lot of new to the development of society. Although this is just an exception to the rules. In addition, antisocial asocial behavior should not be confused, since the latter is associated with criminal, illegal and immoral acts. Asocial behavior derives from the avoidance of other people and the inability to build relationships with them, which, in fact, ends with mental disorders.

Relevant measures

Often the prevention of antisocial behavior is carried out in circles or educational institutions. Its main methods are aimed at helping to set the right priorities, to change the yet unformed value system and, of course, to promote a healthy lifestyle. Preventive measures can take place in the form of lessons, games or tests.

In general, prevention is divided into several types, depending on the complexity of the deviation:

  1. Primary. All actions are aimed at eliminating the factors that triggered the emergence of antisocial behavior and, staying away from these factors, to shape the individual's resistance to their effects.
  2. Secondary. This includes work with a group of risk, that is, with individuals who have had neuropsychiatric disorders, or those with a tendency to antisocial behavior, but not yet manifest.
  3. Tertiary. Direct intervention of doctors with further treatment.

Summing up

Asocial is another. He is distinguished for his closeness, taciturnity, emotional instability and the desire to remain alone with himself. Asocial individuals want to stay away from society. What provoked such zeal? An incorrect system of values, complex circumstances or a simple non-acceptance of the main part of the rules and norms? There is no reliable answer to this question. After all, on the one hand, an antisocial personality can be dangerous and mentally unbalanced, but on the other - it can be an ordinary person who wants to change this world for the better, and he does not want to give up communication, just does not have enough time.
