What are the unpleasant sensations in the urethra

Unpleasant sensations in the urethra (pain, pain when urinating) should always be alarming, as in untimely treatment there is, for example, the risk of developing chronic prostatitis, epididymitis, which cause infertility in men. Untimely detection of neoplastic diseases is even more dangerous.

Clarification of the cause of discomfort during urination is facilitated by detailed pain syndrome (character, localization, time of the onset of pain).

  • The sudden appearance of sharp pain during urination can be caused by acute surgical pathology (passage of stone, trauma) or by an acute inflammatory process.
  • Moderate pain, burning, a sense of heaviness in the pubic region indicate a chronic process.
  • Quite informative is the time of the onset of pain syndrome. For example, the appearance of pain before urination is caused by the stretching of the bladder and is associated with its inflammation (cystitis), tumor, etc. Inflammation in the initial section of the urethra (with polyps in the urethra, passage of stones, acute urethritis) is indicated by the pain syndrome that occurs at the beginning of urination . The pain that appears at the end of urination and gradually fades, arise when the bladder is emptied (the appearance of pain) and ceases at the subsequent filling (pain subsiding). Usually it is associated with a tumor of the neck of the bladder, a stone or a foreign body in the bladder, prostatitis.
  • The localization of pain often indicates an affected organ: pain in the area of the urethra indicates a lesion of the urethra, above the pubis - about the damage of the bladder, in the perineum - about the pathology of the prostate. Pain that lays in the clitoris in women or in the head of the penis in men, is typical for stones in the bladder. Lesions of the prostate are accompanied by pain that radiates into the rectum. The spread of infection in the upper parts (bladder, kidney) is accompanied by the appearance of pain in the waist or in the side.

Note! The severity of the pathology does not depend on the severity of the pain syndrome. For example, in prostate cancer in the initial stages, there may not be any symptoms at all, and only later will moderate pains and difficulty in passing urine.

Sometimes the feeling of discomfort and unpleasant sensations in the urethra occurs after taking some medicines, acidic, spicy or alcoholic drinks. In women, unpleasant sensations in the urethra can be associated with diseases of the uterus and appendages, with the pressure of the enlarged uterus during pregnancy.

Burning in the urethra in men, accompanied by painful sensations when urinating, is a sign of urethritis. Urethritis is also characterized by the appearance of discharge from the urethra, most often in the morning. Depending on the pathogen that caused the development of urethritis, the discharge can be:

  • Grayish-yellow (gonorrheal urethritis);
  • Whitish or light (trichomoniasis urethritis);
  • Purulent (bacterial urethritis).

In the early days, unpleasant sensations in the urethra are usually minor, but as the inflammation progresses, their intensity increases. Urethritis is dangerous in terms of the development of inflammation in the bladder and kidneys, as well as in neighboring organs. Therefore, symptoms such as carvings, pain in the urethra must always be alarming and cause an immediate medical attention.
