Unusual meal, or what to cook for a wake

Since ancient times, a ritual has come to us, which we commemorate in the memory of the deceased: after the funeral of a relative or a close person, a funeral is held, which is a collective meal in the house of the deceased. But what to cook for a wake, what dishes are on the menu on this difficult day? Let us dwell on this question.

Kolivo or kutya

Perhaps, this is the first dish on the memorial table. It is a porridge of grains of wheat, barley or rice, which is filled with raisins and honey and consecrated at the requiem. The corn is a symbol of the Resurrection, and raisins and honey mean the sweetness of bliss in the Kingdom of Heaven. It must be said that it is absolutely necessary to cook kutya for a funeral feast.

How to cook kutya

Wheat grain washed, soaked for a while (you can at night), then cook until ready. Then they are mixed with poppy seeds, honey and raisins, pre-washed, scalded and dried. In this case, honey is first diluted with water (1: 2). In this solution, and the grains are brewed. Note that it is possible to cook kutya for a wake and rice. It is cooked in the same way as wheat.

Pancakes

Pancakes are also a must-have dish on the memorial table. They are associated with the beginning of rebirth, with a new life. They are served with honey. It is interesting that before pancakes were prepared from buckwheat flour. This gave them a pleasant, sourish taste, and they turned out to be much more magnificent. It should be said that you can cook pancakes for a wake today, both from buckwheat and from wheat flour, and can be made combined. Everything depends on the culinary person's personal preferences.

How to cook pancakes

Ingredients: four glasses of flour, four and a half glasses of milk, twenty grams of yeast, salt.

Cooking process

Half a glass of milk is poured into the dishes, in which yeast is bred. Then add a half cup of milk and two glasses of flour. The dough is stirred and placed in a warm place, covered with a towel. When it increases in volume three times, add the remaining flour, salt, milk, again put in a warm place, mixing well. When the dough is right again, pancakes are baked from it in vegetable oil.

Kissel

Kissel is eaten at a wake (the menu must include such a dish) all guests. On the table served sweet fruit jelly or oats, sometimes with milk. They must be thick so that they can be cut with a knife.

Oatmeal oatmeal

Ingredients: two glasses of oatmeal flour, two tablespoons of honey, eight glasses of water, salt.

Cooking process

The flour is poured with warm water and mixed, then left for eight hours in order to make it swell. Then it is filtered, salt and honey are added, boiled until thick. The hot dish is poured into forms, and after cooling it is cut into portions.

Conclusion

Thus, we presented three main dishes for a wake. I must say that the composition of the funeral menu largely depends on the traditions of the family, on its prosperity and the number of guests who usually come by themselves, since it is not customary to invite people to a wake. In any case, the dishes should be simple, but tasty.
