Unique properties of cotton - natural material

For several thousand years, the unique properties of cotton have been known to mankind. Once upon a time, people learned to make cloth from this plant and sew clothes from it. His cultivation is being done now, and on a huge industrial scale. Despite the large number of varieties of modern artificial fabrics, natural cotton products are incomparable in quality with none of them. And again, it's not for nothing that cotton is called "white gold"!

Cotton is the king among the raw materials

It is an annual plant that "lives" in Central Asia, Kazakhstan, Transcaucasia and other regions. In small boxes above the seeds of cotton are delicate "clouds" of natural vegetable cellulose fiber. They are the main value. Depending on the length of fibers, cotton is distinguished by long-fiber, medium-fibrous and short-fibred. To the touch, the cotton ball is very soft, warm, dry and slightly scabrous. Cotton fabrics differ in thickness (thick, medium, thin) and the location of the pile (one-sided and two-sided hairiness). This "tender" material has been familiar to everyone since childhood, because it is from it that clothes for babies are sewn. Even for newborns, the natural properties of cotton fabrics fit perfectly. Unfortunately, nowadays, it is possible to meet the matter of 100% natural "white gold" less and less, and the cost of them is growing. But in mass production, blends are made, containing a different percentage of cotton yarn. It is difficult to distinguish visually these tissues from each other, however, when you touch the body, the sensations from natural and semi-natural material are completely different.

Composition and properties of cotton

Cotton is the most important raw material in the textile industry. It contains 90% pure pulp. The thickness of the villi-threads ranges from 0.01 to 0.04 mm. They are placed one on top of each other in a spiral, and during spinning, screwing one into the other, cause an excellent grip. Clothing made from natural cotton fabrics has excellent hygroscopic and "breathable" properties, due to which it perfectly absorbs sweat, does not stick to the body and creates an optimal microclimate. All things from cotton are highly hygienic, they are very comfortable to wear, do not cause allergic reactions and skin irritations, so they are suitable for everyone. In the presence of skin diseases, doctors recommend wearing only cotton clothes, because it has a curative effect, providing the skin with breathing.

Physico-chemical properties of cotton

Cotton can not be dissolved in alkali, phenol and acetone, but it can be destroyed by hydrochloric and sulfuric acids. It withstands the influence of high temperatures, has a high resistance to tearing and abrasion, which causes the possibility of repeated washings in hot water with the use of detergents and long wear of things made from natural cotton fabrics. In addition, the properties of cotton contribute to absorbing up to 20% of moisture from its own weight, leaving a feeling of dryness.
