History of the Trinity Cathedral

From the very moment of foundation Shchyolkovo was a developed, densely populated factory town. A commercial settlement with such an amount of Orthodox population needed a temple. At the service people traveled to the Nikolsky temple in the village of Zhegalov. The initiators of the construction of the cathedral in Shchelkovo were police sergeant Pavel Strizhev and the owner of the weaving factory Alexander Sinitsyn, who gave part of his land to the temple. The project of a large cathedral was designed not by the then unknown architect S.M. Goncharov. Already in 1915 the team completed the construction of the temple building and began interior finishing.

In 1925, due to certain circumstances (propaganda of atheism), the church was closed. The main structure of the shrine functioned as a theater due to excellent acoustics, and other buildings of the temple complex were given to warehouses. In the war years in the basement of the cathedral was a foundry, where they produced grenades. The temple forever lost its primary outlines: the dome was melted, the bell tower was dismantled and the whole basement floor was completely clogged with casting waste.

Already in 1980 the church wanted to blow up, but this intention was delayed because of the Olympics in Moscow. In 1990, all that remained of the cathedral was again given to the Orthodox community, and in 1991 the service was again conducted in the Trinity Church. Restored and completed the shrine gradually, in subsequent years.

Today the Trinity Cathedral (Shchelkovo) is the main church in the Schelkovo district of the Moscow diocese. It was lighted several times: on December 5, 2910, Metropolitan Yuvenaly and in 2011 on Ascension 12 new bells were illuminated.
