Tree Peony: Planting and Care

To grow a tree-like peony, you need to be able, and most importantly, a patient floriculturist. But the works and the long wait are worth it. Peony in China, which is considered his homeland, called the imperial flower. At the time of flowering, it is really luxurious and refined. There are two main types of pions - grassy and tree-like. In the grassy, the aerial part dies in autumn, the tree-like part is a perennial shrub. And, it is really long-term, as in one place it can grow more than 20 years. The plant is very painfully tolerated by the transplant, so growing a peony of a tree-like tree begins by choosing a place.

Selecting a Peony Location

The place should be somewhat shaded, not exposed to winds. At the time of flowering, when the bush is strewn with magnificent heavy hats, there is a danger that the wind can break branches.

For planting suitable loamy, well drained soil, but its quality is not particularly important, since the planting of the pion tree is always produced in the prepared pit. For the plant, excess moisture is damaging, high groundwater, so sometimes peonies are planted on terraces.

Preparing a landing pit

A landing pit under a young plant should provide it with nutrients for many years to come. Of course, the tree - like peony, planting and caring for which is constant, is always provided on time with fertilizing and fertilizing, but at the very beginning of the life of the flower, in a new place, this is especially important.

The pit is prepared 3 weeks before planting. The distance between bushes should be at least one and a half meters. Under each bush a square with a side of 80 cm is planned, the soil is digged to a depth of at least 70 cm. It turns out almost a cube, on the bottom of which is poured a twenty-centimeter drainage (fine gravel, sand), on top - the dumped manure. Separately, the soil is prepared: equal parts of pure soil, humus, peat. In this mixture is added ash, bone meal and superphosphate.

Selection of planting material

It is important to choose the right tree-like peony, planting and care for which, to a large extent, will be determined by the quality of the young plant. Seedling can be native or grafted on a grassy peony. Of course, the root-peony is much more resistant to diseases, it is easier to take root and live longer.

For cultivation, the best specimen is a bush no more than twenty-five centimeters, already having stubby shoots, with "sleeping" large buds on shoots and in axils of branches, but leaves can even be adherents. The length of the roots should be approximately equal to the height of the crown. It should be remembered that a large seedling is more difficult to take root in a new place.

Planting a tree-like peony

It is recommended to plant all kinds of tree-like peonies in late August - first half of September.

The mixture is mixed and not completely filled up in the pit, and does not completely fill the volume. The plant is planted in a pit on the resulting mound, along which its roots are gently straightened. Top with a mixture of soil so that the root neck was at the level of the edges of the pit. After planting it is required to water the bush abundantly. After a while, the earth will settle and, to prevent the root neck from becoming bare, it is necessary to plant a flower.

Care of the pion

The place is chosen and the tree-like peony is planted. Planting and caring for it are not difficult - loosening, top dressing and watering during the growing season. The first fertilizing with mineral fertilizers is done in the early spring. The second is after flowering. Water the plant rarely, but abundantly, in August, no longer watered.

The main care is pruning and pre-winter preparation.

Faded buds and the tips of the shoots (no more than two kidneys) should be cut off. Next year, this procedure will provide a lush bloom. In the spring dry shoots are removed, the old ones are shortened.

The treelike peony is frost-hardy, but in the central part of Russia and in the northern latitudes it is recommended to cover them with linden, crushed bark, fallen leaves for the winter. Sometimes enough to cover the bush with a cardboard box.

In China, there are peonies, which are 500 years old. They are the pride of Chinese florists. But even in our gardens, a tree-like peony, planted and caring for which is carried out according to all the rules, can live as long.
