Transmission oil 80W90: specifications, choice, reviews. What kind of oil is poured into the manual transmission?

Transmission oil 80W90, the characteristics of which we consider today, can be attributed to the average between the viscosity classes 85W90 and 75W90. We learn in more detail what qualitative characteristics it differs from others.

Condensed and non-thickened

Transmission oils are thickened and ungreened. The second is sometimes called single-bar. In the first case, additives thickening the base are installed. Then the two numbers designate the transmission oil: 80W90. The characteristics of single-pot products are manifested in the fact that they are manufactured without the addition of thickeners. They are designated by one number - for example, 80, 90, 140.

Viscosity and temperature conditions

When carrying out a comparative analysis, the viscosity in the operating mode in two species (samples were taken to compare the viscosity class SAE 80W90 and 85W90) was approximately the same. But when working at a low temperature, the thickened species become more liquid, when compared with unalloyed. Therefore, in this indicator they show themselves better. On the other hand, single-purpose lubricants work more stably in the appropriate and normal temperature regime for them. And this is also a very important parameter when working, especially in harsh operating conditions.

Transmission oil 80W90 and 85W90 has the same viscosity at a working temperature of one hundred degrees. But if you take a minus mark at twenty degrees, then the difference will be different many times.

Sometimes manufacturers themselves call all the thickened types of lubricating fluids all-season. But this is not entirely correct statement. Thus, the transmission oil 80W90 characteristics will show serviceable at minus 26 о С, 75W90 - at minus 40 о С, and 85W 90 - only at minus 12 о С. Thus, for residents of the southern regions, all indicators are really suitable for year-round use. But for those who live in the northern regions, the parameters 85W90, and sometimes 80W90, will obviously be insufficient.

Welding load: foreign and domestic requirements

When the lubricating fluids are compared, the main indicator to which attention is paid is the welding load. It is determined on a conventional 4-ball friction machine. Since the transmission oil 80W90, the characteristics of which are grouped according to the API classification, belongs to the group GL 5 (and it involves operation in heavily loaded bridges and with hypoid gears), as well as the viscosity class 85W90, the result by the standard should be from 3280 N. The examined samples were tested from 3283 to 4635 N. This testifies to the presence of good qualitative characteristics of transmission lubricating fluids.

But apart from this classification there is another, domestic. According to it, the requirements are even more stringent than in the API abroad and for foreign cars. For example, according to representatives of AvtoVAZ, the class GL 5 should produce results of at least 3,483 N, and in the AZLK the norm is all 3924 N. Therefore, if we focus on domestic manufacturers, the test results will no longer seem so satisfactory.

All the beloved "Castrol"

You can consider a specific unalloyed "Castrol" oil. All of its parameters, in addition to viscosity at a certain temperature, will be no worse than thickened lubricating fluids. At the same time, the wider the working range, the more difficult it will be to compare the condensed milk with the non-gelding. For example, if the transmission oil 80W90 (GL 5 API classification) shows good viscosity at a centigrade, will maintain the load at the proper level, and maintain excellent low-temperature qualities, uncontaminated oil will support the load in the same way as the SAE 90 lubricant, or Will have similar low-temperature properties with oil class SAE 80.

So, the "castrol" of the EPX80 group showed a close result with the considered 80W90 on the parameter of cold resistance. At the same time, its load of welding can not be called excellent.

However, this result does not mean that the unleaded transmission oil is worse than the viscous oil. This only indicates that it should be operated under more suitable conditions.

Which characteristics are optimal

So, a good quality characteristic of viscosity is 150 degrees Celsius and above 5 square millimeters per second. At low temperatures, an excellent viscosity is one that does not increase more than 150,000 mPa * s. The temperature that will be at this dimension, and is the limit to ensure the normal operation of the transmission. If the lubricating fluid is used at a lower value, this will have a negative effect on the automotive mechanisms.

What oil is poured into the manual gearbox

Previously, such a question simply did not arise. It was enough just to tell the seller that you need a motor or transmission oil. But at the present time, when store shelves are overflowing with many names of oils, one has to understand their various parameters in order to finally understand which oil is poured into a manual transmission or automatic.

For example, it is known that GL 4 and GL 5 are suitable for cars, and for domestic ones even lower.

But with regard to viscosity, the matter with it is more complicated. For example, if you take the transmission oil 80W90 (reviews of motorists in this are similar to the results of independent tests), they have more cold-resistant characteristics than the 85W90 and can safely be used in the temperature range from -20 to -25 About C. At the same time for transmission grade viscosity 85W90 normal operation will be provided only to minus 12 o C.

Both the oil group and its viscosity are indicated on the canister packaging. Therefore, all that remains for the car enthusiast is simply to understand the necessary parameters for his car and choose a certain brand of oil.

"Lukoil" TM 4: Transmission oil 80W90, price, specifications

Having dealt with the main characteristics, you can proceed to individual types of transmission lubricating fluids.

Among the best oils of the considered class is the transmission oil "Lukoil" 80W90 TM 4. It is a simple and inexpensive, but high-quality lubricant fluid that will work perfectly both on cars and on oil-intensive trucks. It is made on a mineral basis. In addition to the base, the lubricant contains an additive package that improves properties. It shows itself well even at very low temperatures and is able to remain in working condition for a long time. Of course, oil can not be called elite, but for "workhorses" this transmission is just what you need.

The advantages of the oil are as follows:

  • Simple and reliable composition;
  • Large temperature range;
  • Good work at low temperature;
  • Availability of wear-resistant and other additives that improve quality;
  • low price.

The compatibility of the API - GL 4 group is the only drawback that this 80W90 transmission oil has. The price to many will seem tempting: from 137 rubles for one liter. For comparison: "TNK TransGipoid" 80W90 costs 539 rubles per liter; Motul Gearbox 80W90 - 855 rubles; Ford 80W90 - 1300 rubles.
