The talus bone: fracture

Quite a rare medical term, is not it? Really, what kind of talus is this? My son says that the name is like a "turban". He is a lover of fishing. The caught fish salty, drains and calls it a small dragon, regardless of the breed. I'll have to shed some light on this very bone. Moreover, there is such a pathology as a fracture of the talus bone.

So this bone is also called the supraclavicular. It's already easier, right? It forms the ankle joint - its lower part. Among the bones of the tarsus (the totality of the foot bones) the talus bone is second in its size. Of all the bones of the human body, it is most covered with articular cartilage. During walking or running 100% of the mass of the human body takes on this particular bone.

Fracture of the talus

In general, this pathology is very rare, accounting for up to 1% of all cases of limb fractures. Nevertheless, such a trauma is severe. Approximately 1/3 of all cases of fracture of the talus result in the disability of the victim.

The point is that this fracture provokes a deficiency in blood supply to the bone. Even in the case when the integrity of the vessels during the injury is not affected, then as a result of their squeezing with fragments or swelling, bone nutrition is disrupted. Such a trauma, especially with uncomfortable fractures, can also provoke necrosis.

From the secondary osteoarthritis, the subtalar joint suffers. Thus, the functions of the ankle joint are disrupted. The victim experiences severe pain when moving.

Causes

Most often the cause is a drop from the height directly to the straightened legs. Basically, there is a fracture in the neck of this bone. In this case, often this pathology occurs in conjunction with other fractures. In particular, this combination with the compression fracture of the calcaneus.

I hope readers remember that the talus bone is a capillary? Here the cumulative fractures of calcaneal and buccal bones are most common. More rarely, such fractures occur in combination with fractures of other foot bones: navicular, wedge-shaped, metatarsal.

Symptoms

  • Pronounced edema of the foot.
  • Difficulties in determining the location of bone pathology.
  • When palpation is determined by the displacement of the supraclavicular (talus) bone.
  • Stop in the bending position.
  • There is a sharp pain when moving in the ankle.
  • Pain when you try to move your thumb.
  • Deformation of the foot when the fragments are displaced.

Diagnostics

Diagnosis is somewhat difficult. The most effective informative diagnostic method is computed tomography. This bone is located in the middle of other bone structures. That is why standard radiographs do not allow to determine the nature of pathology reliably.

Treatment

To select the tactic of treatment, the type of damage is first determined. Pathologies are distinguished as a fracture of the neck or body of the bone. Also, there are marginal fractures and fragments, with or without displacement of fragments. The scales of the displacement are determined using computed tomography.

With this approach, you can see the exact fracture line, determine the need for the operation, its nature and volume. In particular, if there is a bias, it may be necessary to use osteosynthesis. If the displacement is absent, then the fracture of the talus bone is treated conservatively.

Of great importance is the postoperative period. The talus bone during the splicing requires radiographic control, regular examinations. It grows together for several (up to four) months. Thus, using the most modern diagnostic methods and methods of treatment, the best results are achieved with the restoration of the calcaneus.
