The drug has antihypertensive, sedative, antipsychotic effect. The drug provokes a persistent lowering of blood pressure. The drug "Reserpine" helps to reduce the concentration of dopamine (this is due to the likely extrapyramidal (motor) disorders), serotonin and other neurotransmitters, thus providing an antipsychotic effect. The drug reduces the effect of sympathetic innervation on the cardiovascular system, reduces the overall peripheral resistance and heart rate. "Reserpine" helps maintain the activity and to some extent enhances the action of the nervous parasympathetic system, intensifies and aggravates the physiological sleep, replaces interoreceptive reflexes. The medicine increases the peristalsis of the digestive system, inhibits metabolic processes, aggravates and reduces respiratory movements. The drug provokes hypothermia, miosis. Reserpine (application instruction contains such information) positively affects protein, lipid metabolism in patients with coronary atherosclerosis and arterial hypertension. The drug enhances kidney blood flow, glomerular filtration.

The medicine "Reserpine" recommends the use of arterial hypertension, neurosis, thyrotoxicosis, psychosis, psychomotor agitation on a background of schizophrenia, with late gestosis. Medication in combination with other agents is prescribed in depressed-agitated states for patients with presenile psychosis. Medication is contraindicated in Parkinson's disease, hypersensitivity, depression, epilepsy. Side effects include dry mouth, abdominal pain, bleeding in the digestive tract, dyspepsia, nausea. The drug can cause arrhythmia, bradycardia, peripheral edema, urinary retention, or frequent urination. In some cases, there may be a decrease in libido, itching of the skin, herpes, allergies, weight gain, hyperemia of the eye mucosa.

Dosage of the medication is set individually.

With arterial hypertension, for example, an initial dose of 0.1 milligram is usually given twice a day during the day. It is preferable to take the medicine in the morning and in the evening. If the expected hypotensive effect is not achieved within five or seven days, the dosage can be increased to 0.25-0.5 milligrams in two or three doses during the day. After stabilizing the pressure, the amount of the drug taken gradually decreases to 0.2-0.1 mg per day. Duration of therapy is two or three months.
