The drug has antihypertensive, sedative, antipsychotic effect. The drug provokes a persistent lowering of blood pressure. "Reserpine" helps maintain the activity and to some extent enhances the action of the nervous parasympathetic system, intensifies and aggravates the physiological sleep, replaces interoreceptive reflexes. The medicine increases the peristalsis of the digestive system, inhibits metabolic processes, aggravates and reduces respiratory movements. The drug provokes hypothermia, miosis. Dosage of the medication is set individually.

With arterial hypertension, for example, an initial dose of 0.1 milligram is usually given twice a day during the day. It is preferable to take the medicine in the morning and in the evening. If the expected hypotensive effect is not achieved within five or seven days, the dosage can be increased to 0.25-0.5 milligrams in two or three doses during the day. After stabilizing the pressure, the amount of the drug taken gradually decreases to 0.2-0.1 mg per day. Duration of therapy is two or three months.
