The highest waterfall is Angel

On the Guiana Plateau in South America, on the small Churun River, is the highest waterfall in the world. It is surrounded by a kingdom of high mountains, turbulent rivers flowing along deep canyons, and dense, hard-to-reach forests - a wild and poorly developed corner of the globe.

The waterfall has a height of 1054 meters, other sources say that it is slightly less - 979 meters. The highest waterfall has several names. The most famous is Angel, which means "angel", and he is named after the name of the discoverer - Juan Angel. The Indians call it Churun-Meru or Apemeya, which translates as "a girl's eyebrow."

Europeans Angel discovered relatively recently. The fact is that this miracle of nature - a kilometer vertical water flow - is located in the most remote and inaccessible corner of our planet. The river Churun flows along the plateau of Ayan-Tepui (Mount Devil). Folded with porous sandstones, this mountain range rises 2600 meters above the selva. The water of the river, steeply breaking down from a steep rock wall into a dense tropical forest, forms the highest waterfall on Earth.

The discoverer of the waterfall is an adventurer

The official opening took place at the beginning of the last century. At this time, there is an outbreak of diamond fever in Venezuela. Numerous adventurers rushed into impassable jungle. Juan Angel was one of them. On a small sports plane, in 1935, he flew to Auan-Tepeui, hoping to find diamonds there.

Diamond deposits Angela could not be discovered, but he saw the highest waterfall and informed the whole world of its existence. His plane crashed, had to make an emergency landing in the same area that Conan Doyle described in his famous novel "The Lost World." Angel miraculously managed to get out of the impenetrable jungle, and, having reached the first settlement, he immediately reported on the perfect discovery. Since then, his name is written on all the maps of the world, in the very place where the highest waterfall of our planet is.

Lost world became available to all

Only fourteen years after the famous flight of Angel, in 1949, a group of American and Venezuelan geodesists with great difficulty managed to get to the waterfall. They had to use their machetes and axes to cut their way through the wild jungle, entirely interlaced with lianas. For the last 36 km of the road, 19 days were spent. Their efforts were fully paid off when they saw firsthand the whole unforgettable beauty of the water column falling from a huge height into a large lake at the foot of the plateau.

The area in the area of the Devil's Mountain is so difficult to navigate that for a very long time only the most courageous researchers could get to it. In our time, everyone can see the highest waterfall. The local authorities managed to organize tourist routes to it. You can fly to Anhel by a small light helicopter or swim along the river by a canoe with a motor. Fans of extreme sensations are given the opportunity to fly on a hang-glider, jumping from the edge of the plateau, and enjoy all the splendor of the falling water from a bird's eye view.
