The Volga city of Cheboksary is the center of the Chuvash Republic, its capital. From Moscow it is separated by 660 kilometers, from Nizhny Novgorod - 250 kilometers. Cheboksary is located in a beautiful place. Which region of Russia is closest to it? It is Nizhny Novgorod.

History of the city

Archaeological excavations show that in the place of present Cheboksary in the 13th century there was a settlement of people. The first chronicle mention of the Chuvash-Bulgarian settlement dates back to 1469. And since 1555 in its place was already the supporting fortress of Moscow Rus. The creation of it is attributed to Ivan the Terrible. This fortress was a reliable defense on the southern borders of Russia.

Only two centuries later Cheboksary became a city. This was due to the development of trade, which contributed to the Volga River. Bread, salt, furs, honey, leather raw materials - all this traded brisk Russian merchants. At first the city was assigned to the Kazan province. However, already in 1781 it became an independent county town.

Cheboksary: which region of Russia took the city under its "wing"

At the beginning of the 20th century Cheboksary turned first into the center of the Chuvash Autonomous Region, then into the capital of the Chuvash Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. Finally, in 1992 - in the capital of the Chuvash Republic.

So the question: "Cheboksary - which area of the Russian Federation?" - Not entirely correct. Because Chuvashia is a republic that is part of the Russian Federation, which has not only its capital, Cheboksary, but also its Constitution, coat of arms, anthem ...

It is located in the center of the European part of Russia. The closest is to the city of Cheboksary Nizhny Novgorod region (in the west), as well as Ulyanovsk (in the south). The Republic of Tatarstan, Mordovia and the Republic of Mari El are bordered by the Chuvash Republic.

To finally close the issue on the location of the city, it is worth saying that you can still find on the map of Russia such an address: Cheboksary, Tambov region. Only for clarification it is necessary to insert another Nikiforovsky district, and before the word Cheboksary write a village.

What is Shupashkar?

It turns out that this name is called Chuvashi Cheboksary. By the way, in Chuvashia there are two official languages: Chuvash and Russian.

In translation from Chuvash to Russian it means "wooden trench". However, the opinion of the local population is divergent as to why this name arose and what was the reason for it. However, the convergence is that this trough is from a water mill. That's just which of them: the one by which water arrives, or the one by which flour is poured?

However, there are more scientific explanations for the meaning of the word "Shushashkar". One of them is the "Chuvash settlement" (from "Chepe Suar"), the second - "fenced water". Indeed in ancient times the city was comprehensively surrounded by water. On the one hand - the Volga, on both sides - Cheboksarka, at that time a large river, on the fourth side the city was protected by a wide ditch, also filled with water.

During the Soviet era, the Cheboksary Tractor Plant produced a large amount of this equipment and supplied it with a huge country. Now JSC "Cheboksary Industrial Tractors Plant" significantly cut down both its production areas and output volumes. And yet it is still quite a large enterprise today, where people work.
