Not only tourists, but also locals like to spend time here. This place is also called Baryatinsky Park.

If the tourist route shows the Fortress Mountain (Stavropol), the address of this point is very easy to find. The central entrance to the hill is located on Karl Marx Avenue. Beautiful steps lead to the monument of Pushkin, from where you can begin an inspection of the entire territory of the Serf Mountain.

Cross on the Fortress Mountain. Stavropol

The main symbol of the city is on the Fortress Hill - it's a cross. Why the cross? If you believe one of the versions of the origin of the name of the city, then "Stavropol" includes two roots: the stake (in translation - the cross) and pol (that is the city). Originally built here the fortress had a rectangular shape, the basis was two axes, at the intersection, they resembled a cross. Hence the name - Stavropol.

The second version tells that at the time of laying the foundation a cross was found on the site of the fortress construction, the origin of which no one could explain.

Well, the proponents of the third hypothesis state that historical facts indicate that the fortress under construction was marked on the map not by a dot, as was customary in cartography, but by a large cross.

History of the city

How long has Stavropol been born? The fortress mountain is the original center of the city. In 1777, the Khoper Cossacks and soldiers of the Dragoon regiment of the Vladimir regiment began to erect a fortress here. Construction lasted three years. This unique military facility had a kind of foundation, it was fixed on the bottom of the ancient Sarmatian Sea, the site of the surviving wall is a witness to this.

For a long time already there is no moat and earth wall, but the Stavropolians still see a symbol of the birth of the city in a small section of the fortification. Part of the old fortress stretches along Suvorov street and has a length of 34 meters. The fences in the wall have survived to this day. The height of each is 80 cm, the width is 15 cm, the distance between them is 75 cm. Everyone who looks into this hole or takes a picture of the city through a loophole imagines that he has got into the past and sees Stavropol in the future. Not far from the wall there is a reinforced concrete "Khoperskaya tent", inside of which are kept the symbolic keys from the city. At the end of the wall a memorial plaque is fixed, the inscription on which tells about the date of the Stavropol fortress creation, its historical purpose and that this monument is protected by the state.

In 1779, the Russian commander, the famous Generalissimo, and in those days, Lieutenant-General Alexander Vasilyevich Suvorov visited Stavropol. The fortress mountain and Stavropol fortress were listed in its route. Now the bust of the famous commander, authored by the sculptor Verkhovsky, has been erected at this place.

Kazan Cathedral

In the North Caucasus, the Kazan Cathedral is one of the most important Christian churches. For everyone who came to Stavropol, the Fortress Mountain is a place where you can visit the most beautiful cathedral, the history of which is amazing.

The temple was built in 1847, consecrated it in the name of the Kazan Mother of God. She is considered the patroness of all the soldiers and in the whole city of Stavropol. The architect of this grandiose project was the famous KA Ton. Twenty years later, according to the plan of Voskresensky in 1867, a bell tower was built near the cathedral. Its height was about 90 meters. For that time it was a rare height construction. She could be seen from anywhere in the city. Especially majestic, it looked at the entrance from the eastern part of the Tiflis Gate.

A sad fate

For many years the local people worshiped the Kazan Mother of God, begging for this place. More than once the Virgin Mary saved the city from an evil enemy. But in the days of the Communists, her sad fate also touched. Like hundreds of other churches throughout Russia, the cathedral was barbarously destroyed. The most surprising fact is that when the fascists were attacked, the high bell tower was not damaged. Even after the liberation of the city from the invaders, it was blown up by the Communists themselves.

In our time, when Christianity began to revive again, the cathedral was re-erected. The most beautiful building looks majestically on the Fortress Mountain. The height of the new bell tower will be 60 meters.

Soviet symbols

An interesting fact: next to the temple is the burial of the national hero Apanasenko. Especially for this was erected a monument-mausoleum. Iosif Rodionovich was born in the Stavropol region in a poor family. All his conscious life he fought for the ideas of Soviet power. During the Great Patriotic War, he already served the Motherland in the rank of general. He fought both on the Kursk Bulge and Belgorod, where he died in August 1943. Apanasenko understood that he could lay down his head at any moment, so he persuaded to bury him in the Stavropol Territory. His will was fulfilled. Until now, local people are proud of their famous compatriot.

Memory for Heroes

Perhaps, every tourist in the album has a picture that could be signed as follows: "Fortress Mountain, Stavropol". Photos taken for memory, will tell a lot. In Soviet times, on the Great Fortress, grandiose structures were erected, reminiscent of the exploit of the soldiers of the Red Army. In 1976, standing with his back to the cliff, a 7-meter monument "Budenovets" rose above the city. The people called him Alyosha. He is a symbol of the Russian soldier. At the foot of it there are always fresh flowers.

Remember the local residents and the feat of their fellow countrymen during the Great Patriotic War. The memorial "Eternal Glory" created here collects hundreds of grateful descendants on Victory Day. In the Soviet years, a young generation was accepted into the pioneers, and now the newlyweds are laying flowers to the Eternal Flame. This became a local tradition.

Modern renovation of the territory

Where is the Fortress Mountain in Stavropol, how to get there, Every citizen will tell. It is here that people like to relax, spend their free time, meet on holidays.

On the initiative of one of the patrons of the city, a modern fountain was erected on the Fortress Mountain. It was he who gave the local park a finished cozy look. A chic musical fountain was created according to a project developed in Europe, equipment was also bought there. Not far from the fountain was built from the shell part of the fortress wall and installed a cannon, creating an atmosphere of antiquity.

How not to fall in love with this place, where you can relax, admire the fountain, listen to music and mentally plunge into history?
