Short life

The Monk Siluan (in the world Simeon Antonov) was born in 1866 in the village of Shovsky in the Lebedyansky district of Tambov province, in an ordinary peasant family. It is very significant for believers that he was brought up in the Orthodox faith thanks to his parents.

Since childhood, he had the desire to go around the world to seek God. And when he grew up, he wanted to go to the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra as a monk, but his father wished that he would go to military service, and then, if the desire remains, he would go to the monastery.

In his youth, according to him, he was unusually strong and could even bend the nails with his fingers, break the board with the blow of a fist, drink vodka, but she did not take it when everyone else was already under the table.

In 1892, Simeon resigned and immediately went to Athos, there, in the Panteleimon monastery, he took the monastic vows with the name Siluan.

He recalled that all the way, while he was getting to Athos, the infernal flames circulated around him, they were devilish servants who interfered with his desire to become a saint of God.

The book of Sofroniy Sakharov

About the life of this Russian saint wrote a wonderful book of his disciple, Archimandrite Sofroniy Sakharov, under the title "Elder Siluan." According to his biography, the monk, from the very beginning of his monastic life, with zealous prayers, gained the grace of the Holy Spirit and at the same time experienced various kinds of temptations. His student carefully preserved all his memories and reflections and published a book on them that would be very useful for the spiritual education of any Orthodox person and could even become his handbook.

The elder Silvan reposed before the Lord in 1938, and exactly fifty years later the name of the Monk was glorified by the Patriarchate of Constantinople. And in 1992, with the blessing of Patriarch Alexy II, this holiday was introduced in the months of the ROC.
