Real stories about the most cruel prisons in the world

Prison is not the place where most of us will agree to spend at least an hour, not to mention the rest of life. But some correctional institutions go beyond simple punishment and turn into a real hell on earth. Their charters are so cruel, and the conditions for staying in them are so dreadful that a simple philistine immediately has a logical question: "Is it still possible in our day?" Before you are the most terrible prisons of the planet.

Quezon City, prison in the Philippines

The prison in Caisson City was built in 1953 with the expectation of 800 prisoners. However, representatives of the United Nations, who assessed the living conditions, stated that no more than 237 people can be accommodated at the same time. But in fact, in early 2016, there were about 3,600 prisoners in the prison. Philippines have sad criminal glory, here many inhabitants earn on a craft of drugs and enter armed firing.

It is curious that the newly elected president during his election campaign called on ordinary citizens to commit lynching over drug dealers and rapists. According to the head of state, this measure will contribute to the outflow of prisoners from prisons. Paradoxically, the controversial measure led to more unrest on the street. And now more than 4,000 people are prisoners of the most densely populated prison in the world. They are forced to sleep on each other, breathe stink and fall dead during the hot days.

ADX Florence Prison

According to experts, the correctional facility in the state of Colorado is the worst in the United States of America. Robert Hood, who held the post of overseer from 2002 to 2005, said: "This place is much worse than death." The institution was put into operation in 1994. It was conceived as a place of isolation for the most notorious criminals in order to avoid escapes and reprisals against guards. The killers are kept in tiny (2 x 3.5 meters) single cells and do not see anyone for 23 hours a day. The construction of the building makes the prisoners through the tiny window see only the walls of the prison. The chamber doors are soundproofed, and power is supplied through narrow slots.

Vologda Pyatik, the frame of Fire

This is one of the most isolated prisons on the planet, and escape from here is impossible for geographical reasons. The island with a prison for prisoners sentenced to capital punishment is cut off from the big earth by the lake. There are about 200 prisoners who remain in cells with thick walls 22.5 hours a day. Many prisoners have lost contact with the outside world, because a meeting with relatives is complicated by strict prison laws. Visits are possible only four times for the entire term of imprisonment. Thus, notorious murderers quietly go crazy. It's terrible to imagine what will happen if one of them comes to freedom for exemplary behavior.

Muhanga Prison, Rwanda

Earlier this place was known as the prison of Gitarama, which was opened in 1973 in the homonymous town in Rwanda. Initially, it was planned to accommodate from 400 to 725 prisoners. Nevertheless, after the genocide in 1994, 6,800 people languish in stuffy dungeons at the same time. There is practically no place to sit and lie, there are no toilets. Because of the constant contact with the feces, many prisoners rot and fester their gangrene. However, losing fingers or even legs due to amputation is nothing compared to death from suffocating heat, dysentery and pneumonia are also rampant here. But a new prisoner immediately claims a vacant "place".

Facility 1391, Israel

This correctional facility is a secret military facility. You will not find it on the map, even if you try hard. In 2003, the world learned about the facility 1391 from a historian involved in a police investigation. The specialist was looking for buildings built by the British in the 30s and 40s of the 20th century. That's when the discrepancy was noticed: one object was not mapped. And although the prison has existed for at least 20 years, only a few government officials knew about it.

The former inhabitants of this secret object say that soldiers and guards are brutally torturing and raping prisoners. People go through moral humiliation and sleep deprivation. In the cells themselves, it is so dark that the prisoners do not see their own hands in the face. They transported here in a dark sack on their heads, and families were informed that their relative had left for another country.

Prison of Karandiru, Brazil

This correctional institution was closed in 2002 because of frequent reports of atrocities. 17 per cent of prisoners were infected with HIV due to rape and the introduction of narcotics intravenously. On October 2, 1992, as a result of a fight between rival factions, armed police officers, in a half-hour, 111 people were shot on the spot. In total, for the entire existence of the prison, the guards killed about 1300 people. And this is not counting the AIDS victims who were not provided with any medical assistance.
