Retrospective - what is it?
In various spheres of life the term "retrospective" becomes very fashionable. They use it in different contexts and spheres of interests - in medicine, art, history as such. So, a retrospective - what is it? It's a look that's turned into the past. In medicine, retrospective is a synonym for anamnesis, and in art, a glance at the past is reflected in the exhibition of paintings, for example. The value of retrospective is specific - it seems to open the veil of the past, allowing you to look into some secrets, to recognize some mechanisms that led to the current state of affairs. It is an invisible bridge between the present and the past, whose significance is very high.
Retrospective - what is it: through the prism of the cinema
Today the notion of retrospective became relevant in the cinema. Here the word has acquired a unique meaning. Retrospective became known as a selection of the best and most grandiose films of one actor, who, as a rule, had long ago graduated from a career. The very phrase "retrospective of films" causes associations with very old films, often black and white. For example, Orson Welles's retrospective program will include such films as "Citizen Kane" in 1941, "Process" in 1962, "F as a fake" in 1973
Abuse of the term
Another problem associated with the retrospective is the abuse of the term that occurs in connection with the rush around him. It is necessary to understand the meaning of the word retrospective, that this is a very narrow term that does not tolerate fashionable interpretations. And when something becomes fashionable, it is rarely possible to save. Now everyone around us thinks that the old films are cool, and they boast about their various hobbies - here Claire Denis, and Seijun Suzuki, and the same Charlie Chaplin. People do not even realize the meaning and deep meaning of films, they blindly obey fashion, often profaning the tribute of the past with their conclusions. On the other hand, an excessive passion for the past should not change the modern cinema so much. Needless to say, how much the standards of cinema have changed, and it is unlikely that society will attend cinemas for the sake of black and white ribbons, which, it is a sin to hide, are difficult to perceive. The retrospective reflects a very important part of our life, but the rank that society has given it, defiles and for the better, changes it.
