New-Zealand director Lee Tamahori in the early 2000s became famous as the creator of dynamic, exciting and rather tough pictures - the last (very lucrative) series of the Bond movie "Die, But Not Now" and the thriller "And the Spider Comes." After the deafening success, he withdrew two medium-sized militants, which remained unnoticed by the viewer, but they were smashed to the top by critics, thus putting an end to the Hollywood career of Tamahori. And then the director comes the idea to shoot the film "The Devil's Double" about the life of Saddam Hussein's son. Nobody suspected how difficult the process of creating a tape would be.

Continuous problems

Problems with the financing of the film "The Devil's Double" (actors and roles were selected each other in the framework of a meager budget) did not allow to begin the filming process for several years. The script on the memoirs of Latif Yahya, who was a duplicate of the Black Prince (son of Hussein), was written by screenwriter Michael Thomas in record time. But since the plot did not fit into the stereotype of American cinema on the Iraqi theme, and the falling director's rating was not available for funding, the shooting did not begin for 10 years. In the end, cash ($ 19.1 million) was found in Belgium. Remove a steep blockbuster with famous stars in the lead roles and a mass of special effects on this amount was not possible. Therefore, the creators decided to try their hand at the psychological genre, especially since the subject matter turned out to be suitable. So there was a crazy thriller, more like a terrible fairy tale - "The Devil's Double". The actors involved in the project are little known to the general public.

No halftones

As it turned out, psychology is not the strongest side of the director of Tamahori. The actors of the movie "The Devil's Double" said that they were shocked by the episodes that they had to play. The director demanded the flow of blood and hard naturalism in the frame (apparently out of habit). Developing the characters' characters, he rigidly, without halftones, placed emphasis. The performer of the main roles (Udeia and Latif) Dominique Cooper, whose double acting is one of the main successes of the film, barely had time to undergo a metamorphosis of the image. The actors and roles of the film "The Devil's Double" are sure to be remembered by the viewer. Who can leave indifferent Uday, who came to the cinema as a dark demon, or Latif - cute, white and fluffy? Such a contrast will certainly surprise the viewer, and the events unfolding in the film shock.

The "Devil's Double" thriller, the actors taking part in the shootings, called an excellent baiopic about the eldest son of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. From acting casting, the most prominent performer is Dominique Cooper, an English actor, who began his professional career on television, starring in films exclusively in episodic roles. The situation radically changed in 2001, the actor is removed in a secondary role in the film "From Hell" and is attracted by the creators of paintings with a world-wide reputation. Now the filmography of Cooper has passed for 30 films, but none of the roles played, according to the actor, in complexity could not be compared to the double work in the project Tamahori. To play two similar images, which differ only in appearance, differ in timbre of voice, facial expressions, bite, it is not easy, here you need a true dramatic talent for reincarnation. But Cooper perfectly coped with the task.

Femme woman and supporting actors

The French actress of theater and cinema Lyubovin Sanya has a decent experience, her filmography is significant in the number of pictures, and the images are multifaceted and versatile. In the work of Tamahori she performed the role of a lover of leopard dresses, a fatal woman in the life of the main characters - Sarrab. Not all film critics were supportive, appreciating the efforts of the actress, to many it seemed an inactive or completely useless element in the movie "The Devil's Double". Actors-companions Sagne on the set were surprised by this verdict of the critics, noting the professionalism of Ludivin.

The other actors, who embodied the vsroplanovyh and episodic characters, perfectly revealed the characteristics of their characters. And for this they sometimes had only a couple of minutes of screen time, their actions were more eloquent than any emotional words. For example, the episodic Hussein Sr. (Filip Kvost), thanks to the efforts of the actor, appears before the viewer of a quick-tempered, but not devoid of wisdom, a family patriarch suffering from shame, who is crushed by his foolish son on his gray head.

Plot

Survived in the war in Kuwait, Iraqi officer Latif Yakiy (Dominic Cooper) returns home, to Baghdad. There he is waiting for an offer, from which he can not refuse. The eldest son of Saddam Hussein Uday (again Cooper), in the past a classmate of Latif, chooses an unhappy young man for the role of his double. The guys really have similar features, everything else is planned to be corrected, resorting to the help of a plastic surgeon. Latif receives all the elements of the necessary entourage - costumes and ornaments from famous brands, but his job duties turn out to be rather troublesome. Hardly survived the attempt, Yakiy thinks about escape, circumstances are complicated by his sympathy for the favorite of his son Hussein, the girl, as they say, with the difficult fate of Sarab (Ludivin Sanya). However, the romantic line in the tape turned out rather unconvincing. Intrigue to the narrative is fully provided by the figure of the odious son of Hussein.

Excursion to the history

It is impossible to unequivocally judge the historical reliability of the events described in the film, most likely, the writers have allowed themselves excessive liberties. In general, the project looks dignified, monolithic, without annoying sagging of the plot and without disappointing failures. The acting group plays at the level, the work of the operator is virtually flawless, the musical accompaniment is in harmony with the plot line, the story is unofficially and boldly stated. Cinema is worth seeing at least for general development and, of course, in order to admire the brilliant metamorphoses of the chameleon Cooper.
