Recto-manoscopy is necessary for your health

Recto-manoscopy is a very unpleasant, but sometimes necessary, procedure that is prescribed to patients with different diagnoses. Persistent abdominal pain, persistent stool disorders, impurity of extraneous discharge (blood, pus, etc.) in the feces, itching in the anus - these and many other unpleasant symptoms can be an indication for examination. Rectoromanoscopy of the intestine is carried out by inserting two instruments into the anus : the sigmoidoscope and the rectoscope. In addition, the doctor examines the mucosa with the fingers. Refusing a painful procedure is not necessary: sigmoidoscopy is one of the manipulations that allows you to make an accurate diagnosis and prevent the development of incurable diseases. With its help, you can examine the sigmoid and rectum and establish the presence of the following pathologies:

  • Infectious lesions;
  • Fistulas of the intestines and anal canal;
  • Nonspecific colitis;
  • Hypertrophy of the anal papilla;
  • Cracks, hemorrhoids, etc.

How to prepare for sigmoidoscopy

Successful screening requires the joint action of the doctor and patient. The first one should explain that sigmoidoscopy is an ordinary medical procedure, and there is nothing shameful about it. In addition, the doctor is obliged to warn the patient that complications are possible: bleeding or (much less often) perforation. After receiving the consent of the patient, the doctor appoints him a course of preparation. Most often, it goes according to this pattern:

  • The patient is prescribed a diet that promotes the cleansing of the intestines. With constipation or excess weight, nightly enemas can be recommended.
  • For two days before the study, some patients are recommended to reduce the amount of food or completely abandon it, and use only water.
  • One and a half to two hours before the examination, the patient is given an enema. It can be used for ordinary or soapy water. Some diagnoses require a procedure without enema.
  • If the patient experiences severe pain, the site of administration may be irrigated with anesthetics before the procedure.

How is the study going?

Recto-manoscopy is a manipulation that can be performed with or without the administration of a sedative. The patient is placed in the desired position (knee-elbow or lying on the left side), isolate the sterile laundry with the place of introduction of the instruments. While the patient is breathing slowly and deeply, the doctor verifies with the help of palpation the presence of blood or pus in the anus. After that, inject a vaseline-lubricated sigmoidoscope and pump (Insufflate) a little air. Removing the feces if necessary, the doctor can not only examine the intestines, but also remove the polyps, or use tissue biopsy tools or special brushes to take the tissue for analysis. After the extraction of the device, a rectoscope is introduced and the mucous membranes are examined using a special lamp. During the study, the patient may experience minor pain. However, many patients who undergo sigmoidoscopy agree that the greatest inconvenience is not so much physical pain in the introduction of instruments, as unpleasant psychological experiences.
