Potassium iodine. Tablets and eye drops

Colorless (almost white) cubic crystals or fine crystalline white powder, salty-bitter to taste, but not odorless, is potassium iodine. It is very damp in the damp and warm air. Easily soluble in ordinary water, alcohol, glycerin.

Potassium iodine is perfectly absorbed by the digestive tract, it is secreted mainly by the kidneys.

The most commonly used drugs are iodine

- with endemic goiter, hyperthyroidism, for preparation for various operations with pronounced forms of thyrotoxicosis;

- with eye diseases (opacity of the vitreous and cornea, cataracts, hemorrhages in the eye membranes);

- with inflammatory diseases of the respiratory tract, severe bronchial asthma;

- with fungal lesions on conjunctiva and cornea.

An important property of potassium iodide is its ability to effectively prevent the accumulation of radioactive iodine in the thyroid gland and to ensure its protection from radiation effects.

Take this drug inside in the form of solutions, tablets, drops and potions. To avoid irritation, the gastrointestinal tract is washed down with milk, sweet tea or jelly.

Potassium iodide solutions are never injected into a vein because of the depressant effect on the heart of potassium ions.

As an adjuvant, potassium iodine is prescribed for severely ill syphilis (most often in the Tertiary period). This drug helps to reduce pain, resorption of infiltrates. Also prescribed and in the treatment of actinomycosis of the lungs.

Ophthalmic practice uses, as a "resorptive" remedy, eye drops "Potassium iodine" in the form of a 3% solution. Bury 2 drops a couple of times a day in the conjunctival sac. The duration of such treatment is 10-14 days.

If there is a threat of possible entry into the human body of radioactive iodine for reliable protection against thyroid gland cancer, doctors prescribe to children over 2 years and adults to 0.125 g once a day; To small children (under 2 years old) - to 0.04 g once a day. The tablet is crushed and served with a small amount of sweet tea or jelly.

With the use of the drug "Potassium iodine", there are possible phenomena of some iodine: a runny nose, Quincke's edema, urticaria, etc., and when ingested - unpleasant sensations, light pains in the epigastric region are possible.

This drug is contraindicated in nephritis, nephrosis, hemorrhagic diathesis, pulmonary tuberculosis, furunculosis, pyoderma, urticaria, acne, increased sensitivity to iodine, pregnancy.

Drops of "Potassium iodine"

The active substance drops of potassium iodine is potassium iodide (in 1 ml of its solution is 20 mg). Additional substances: sodium thiosulfate, chlorhexidine diacetate, sodium chloride, purified water, disodium edetan.

Iodine is excreted very slowly. Potassium iodine (ionic inorganic compound) is not metabolized at all. Single compounds are excreted by the kidneys.

The drug "Potassium iodide" is usually applied

- to maintain complex processes of resorption in the eyes, especially exudate,

- with changes in the vessels of the choroid and retina of the eyeball ,

- with hemorrhages and cataracts of different etiology, cataracts of the initial stage, atrophy of the optic nerve, parenchymal keratitis.

It is also used as an additional agent in the treatment of keratitis and fungal conjunctivitis. The drug can be used by children, adolescents and adults.

Usually, potassium iodide is very well tolerated. Immediately after instillation, temporary burning may occur. Uncontrolled long-term use of the drug may lead to so-called "iodism," which manifestations are reddening and irritation, increased tear, swelling of the eyelids.

Contraindications: chronic pyoderma of the facial skin, hypersensitivity to some components, pregnancy and feeding, hemorrhagic diathesis. Can not be used to treat newborns.
